Using new and updated layer modes
After Effects 5.5 includes the following new layer modes:
Linear Burn Similar to the Multiply layer mode, except that the resulting blend is darker
Linear Dodge Similar to the Add layer mode
Linear Light Similar to the Add layer mode, except that the resulting colors are inten-
sified
Vivid Light A combination of the Color Dodge and Color Burn layer modes
Pin Light A combination of the Lighten and Darken layer modes
After Effects 5.5 also includes updates to some layer modes so that they now match the
Adobe Photoshop® 6 blend modes. These updated layer modes are Color Dodge, Color
Burn, and Difference. The older modes are preceded by the word "Classic" and are present
to preserve compatibility with older projects.
For information on accessing and using layer modes, see "Using layer modes" in chapter 9.
Cycling through layer modes
Quickly cycle through all the layer modes using only a keyboard shortcut. This is useful for
rapidly experimenting with several modes without manually selecting them from the
layer mode menu. To cycle through a layer's modes, first make sure that the layer is
selected. Then, hold down Shift as you either press the plus/equal key (+/=) to cycle
forward through the transfer mode list, or as you press the underscore/minus key (_/-) to
cycle backward through the transfer mode list.
