Calibration

Specification of encoder resolution is the first essential setup step explained in Chapter 10: Setup.
NOTE
All the essential setup steps described at the beginning of Chapter 10: Setup must be
performed before conducting measurements.
In some cases, it might also be necessary to perform error correction calibration to eliminate the effects of
encoder and machine travel in accuracies.
Error correction can consist of a single linear error correction (LEC) applied across the entire range of
motion on each axis, segmented linear error correction (SLEC) for individual segments of each axis, or
nonlinear error correction (NLEC) applied over the entire X-Y plane. The need for, or type off error cor-
rection will depend on your system and your measurement applications. Error correction is explained in
Chapter 10: Setup.
Systems that contain optional edge detection probes require additional calibration. The extent of required
edge detection calibration depends on your system and your measurement applications, and can include:
• Edge teach • Distance calibration • Cross calibration

Edge teach

Edge teach is a basic edge recognition calibration required by all edge detector systems. The edge teach
should be performed at startup and when lighting, part, magnification or other conditions change. The edge
teach process is performed using the tools in the Magnifications setup screen and is described in Chapter
10: Setup. Edge teach can also be initiated from the Extra tab by touching the Teach icon.
The Extra tab is configured in the Display setup screen described in Chapter 10: Setup.

Distance calibration

Distance calibrations are often required before measuring stick or round parts, or parts with indistinct or
fuzzy edges. Distance calibration is performed using the Magnifications setup screen and is described in
Chapter 10: Setup.

Cross calibration

Cross calibration eliminates the location offset between crosshair and edge detection probes, and is re-
quired when both probe types will be used to probe the same part. Cross calibration is performed using the
Magnifications setup screen and is described in Chapter 10: Setup.
