Appendix B

Overview

StorTrends Software supports Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
CHAP is a type of peer authentication protocol that basically uses a predefined Target
Secret to calculate a unique hash value. This unique hash value is only sent once to
authenticate.

Setting up CHAP

Step
Description
1
Install the latest build of the StorTrends software on the host device.
2
Configure at least one local user (make sure password is 12 characters long min.) and a Volume with
iSCSI support. Create a LUN and assign to a Target. Enable that Target.
3
In Security page for the iSCSI LUN, give that User permission to the Share by selecting that User and
clicking on Apply.
4
Access the LUN/target from a client running MS Initiator. To do this, type the IP address of the
StorTrends storage appliance in the Portals tab or use the iSNS server. To log onto the target, click on
Advanced, and enter the username and password when prompted (fields are called Username and Target
Secret). Click on Apply.
5
You should now be able to view the new space in Disk Management on the Initiator box, create a
partition and format the drive, assign a drive letter, and so on.
