Programming the Remote
Example: Toprogramthe Macro1 button
sothat it turnson the AVR520,TVand a
CableBox,follow thesesteps:
• Press the Macro 1 Button _
and
Mute Button _
at the sametime and
then release them.
• Notethat the Program/SPL Indicator
will flash amber.
• Press the AVRSelector 41_.
• Press the Mute Button _
to storethe
AVR520's poweron command.
• Press the VII) 2 Input Selector Button
to indicatethe nextcommandisfor
"TV Power On."
• Press the Mute Button _
to storethe
TVPowerOnCommand.
• Press the VII) 3 Input Selector Button
to indicate the nextcommand isfor
"CablePowerOn."
• Press the Mute Button _
to storethe
CablePowerOn command.
• Press the Sleep/ChannelUp Button
to complete t he process andstorethe
macrosequence.
After following thesesteps,eachtime you
pressthe Macro 1 Button _,
the
remotewill sendthe PowerOn/Offcom-
mand.
Erasing Macro Commands
Toremovethe commands t hat havebeenpro-
grammedinto one of the Macrobuttons,follow
thesesteps:
1. Pressthe Mute Button _
and the
Macro Button _
that contains t he
commands you wish to erase.
2. Note that the Program/SPLIndicator
will flash amber,and the LEDunder
the AVR Selector _
will turn red.
3. Within ten seconds, p ressthe Surround
Mode Selector/ChannelDown
Button (_.
4. Thered LEDunderthe AVR Selector will
go out, and the Program/SPLIndicator
will turn greenandflash threetimes
beforeit goesout.
5.Whenthe Program/SPL Indicator
goesout, the Macrohasbeenerased.

Programmed Device Functions
Oncethe AVR520'sremotehas beenpro-
grammed for the codesof otherdevices, p ress
the appropriateInput Selector_
to change
the remotefrom controllingthe AVR 520 to
controllingthe additionalproduct. W henyou
pressany oneof the selectors, it will brieflyflash
in redto indicatethat youhavechangedthe
devicebeingcontrolled.
Whenoperatinga deviceotherthan the
AVR520,the controlsmaynot correspond
exactlyto the function printedon the remote
or button. Somecommands, suchasthe volume
control,arethe sameasthey are with the
AVR520.Other buttonswill changetheir
function sothat they correspond to a secondary
label on the remote.Forexample, t he Sleep
and Surroundmodeselectorbuttonsalsofunc-
tion asthe ChannelUpand ChannelDown
buttonswhen operatingmostTVsets, V CRsor
cable boxes. T heChannelUp/Downindicationis
printeddirectlyon the remote.Formanystan-
dard CDplayers, c assettedecks, V CRsandDVD
functions,the standardfunction iconsare print-
ed on top of the buttons.
Forsomeproducts,however, t he function of a
particular buttondoesnot follow the command
printed on the remote. In orderto seewhich
function a buttoncontrols,consultthe Function
Listtablesprinted on page43. To usethose
tables,first checkthe type of devicebeingcon-
trolled (e.g.,TV, V CR).Next,look at the remote
control diagrampicturedat the left. Notethat
eachbutton hasa numberon it.
Tofind out what function a particularbutton
hasfor a specificdevice,find the button num-
ber on the FunctionListand then look in the
columnfor the deviceyou are controlling.For
example, b utton number45 is the Direct button
for the AVR520,but it is the "Favorite" button
for manycable televisionboxesand satellite
receivers. B utton number31 is the Delaybut-
ton for the AVR520, but the Open/Close but-
ton for CDplayers.
NOTE:That the numbersusedto describethe
button functionsat the left for the purposesof
describinghow a button operatesare a differ-
ent set of numbersthan those usedin the rest
of this manualto describethe button functions
for the AVR520.
