Delay Settings
If DolbyDigitalor DolbyProLogicis selectedas
the surroundmodefor an input, you may need
to adjustthe delay time setting.Note that the
delaytime is not adjustablefor any othermodes.
Dueto the different distancesbetweenthe
listeningpositionfor the front-channelspeakers
and the surroundspeakers, t he amountof time
it takesfor soundto reachyour earsfrom the
front versussurroundspeakersdiffers.Youmay
compensate for this differencethrough the use
of the delaysettingsto adjustthe timing for
the speakerplacementand acousticconditions
in yourlisteningroomor hometheater.
Thefactory settingis appropriatefor most
rooms,but someinstallationscreatean uncom-
mon distancebetweenthe front and surround
speakers that may causethe arrivalof front-
channelsoundsto becomedisconnected from
surround-channel s ounds.
Toresynchronize the front andsurroundchan-
nels,follow thesesteps:
1. Measurethe distancefrom the listening
positionto the front speakers.
2. Measurethe distancefrom the listening
positionto the surroundspeakers.
3. Subtract t he distance to the surroundspeak-
ersfrom the distance to the front speakers.
a.When settingthe delay time for the
DolbyDigitalsurroundmodes,the opti-
mal delay time is the resultof that sub-
traction.Forexample,if the front speak-
ers areten feet awayand the surround
speakers are five feet away, the optimal
delaytime is figured as 10-5=5. Thus,
in this example, t he delay time for Dolby
Digitalshould be set at five milliseconds.
b.When settingthe delaytime for the Pro
Logicmode, take the result of the sub-
traction and add 15 to obtain the opti-
mal delaytime. Forexample,if the front
speakers are ten feet awayandthe sur-
roundspeakersarefive feet away,the
optimal delaytime is figured as
10-5+15=20. Thus,in this example, t he
ProLogicdelay shouldbe set at twenty
milliseconds.
NOTE:TheDTS,Logic7 and DSPmodesuse a
fixed, nonadjustable delay time.
TheDolbyDigital modealso includesa separate
settingfor the CenterChannelDelaymode,
sincethe discretenature of thesesignalsmakes
the locationof the center-channel speakermore
critical.Tocalculatethe delayfor the center
channel,measurethe distancefrom the pre-
ferred listeningpositionin the centerof the
roomto both the center-channel speakerand
either the left or right speaker.
Ifthe distances are equal,no further adjustment
is requiredand the centerdelayshouldbe set to
zero.If the distanceto the front speakersis
greaterthan the distanceto the centerspeaker,
you may wish to repositionthe speakers by
movingthe front left and front right speakers
closerto the listeningpositionor the center
speakerfurther awayfrom the listeningposition.
If repositioningof the speakers is not possible,
adjustthe centerdelaytime,adding one milli-
secondof center-channel d elayfor everyfoot
closerto the listeningpositionthe center
speakeris than the front speakers. F orexample,
if the front left and front right speakers are
each 10 feet from the listeningpositionand the
center-channel speakeris 8 feet away,the delay
is figured as 10-8=2, suggesting an optimal
centerdelayof 2 milliseconds.
Toset the delaytime for a specificinput,
