and Connections
System Installation
After unpackingthe unit, and placingit on a solid
surfacecapable of supportingits weight,youwill
needto makethe connections t o youraudioand
videoequipment.
IMPORTANTNOTE:Foryourpersonal s afety
andto avoidpossibledamage to yourequipment
andspeakers, it isalwaysgoodpractice to turn
off andunplugthe AVRandALLsourceequip-
mentfrom the AC outputbeforemakingany
audioor videosystem connections.
Audio Equipment Connections
We recommendthat you usehigh-qualityinter-
connect c anes when makingconnections to
sourceequipmentand recorders to preserve the
integrity of the signals.
1. Connectthe analog output of a CDplayerto
the CD Inputs _.
NOTE:When the CDplayerhas both fixed and
variableaudio outputs,it is bestto usethe fixed
output unlessyoufind that the input to the
receiveris so low that the sound is noisy,or so
high that the signal is distorted.
2. Connectthe analog Play/Out j acksof a cas-
settedeck, MD,CD-Ror otheraudio recorderto
the Tape Input Jacks I_. Connectthe analog
Record/In jackson the recorder to the Tape
Output JacksO on the AVR520.
3. Connectthe output of any digital sources
such assuch as a CDor DVDchangeror play-
er,advancedvideo game,a digital satellite
receiver,HDTVtuner or digital cable set-top
box or the output of a compatible computer
sound cardto the Optical and Coaxial
Digital Inputs _ _ i'[_[].
4. Connect t he coaxialor optical DigitalAudio
Outputs_) on the rearpanelof the AVR520to
the matchingdigital inputconnections o n a CD-R
or MiniDisc recorder.
5. Assemble the AM LoopAntennasupplied
with the unit asshown below. Connectit to the
AM and GND ScrewTerminals O.
6. Connectthe suppliedFMantennato the FM
(75-ohm)Connection _. The FMantenna
may be an externalroof antenna,an inside
poweredor wire-leadantennaor a connection
from a cableTVsystem.Notethat if the anten-
na or connectionuses300-ohmtwin-lead
cable,you must usethe 300-ohm-to-75-ohm
adaptersuppliedwith the unit to makethe con-
nection.
7. Connect t he front, centerand surround
speakeroutputs _ _ @ to the respective
speakers.
To ensurethat all the audio signalsarecarried
to yourspeakerswithout lossof clarity or reso-
lution, we suggestthat you usehigh-quality
speakercable.Manybrandsof cableare avail-
able andthe choiceof cable may be influenced
bythe distancebetweenyour speakers and the
receiver, t he type of speakersyou use, personal
preferences a nd other factors.Yourdealeror
installeris a valuableresourceto consultin
selectingthe propercable.
Regardless o f the brandof cableselected, w e
recommend that you use a cableconstructedof
multistrandcopperwith a gaugeof 14 or smaller.
Remember that in specifyingcable,the lower
the number, t he thickerthe cable.
Cablewith a gaugeof 16 maybe usedfor short
runsof lessthan ten feet.We do not recom-
mendthat you usecableswith anAWG equiva-
lent of 18 or higher, d ue to the powerlossand
degradationin performance that will occur.
Cables that are run insidewallsshouldhavethe
appropriatemarkingsto indicatelistingwith UL,
CSAor otherappropriatetesting agencystan-
dards.Questionsabout runningcablesinside
wallsshouldbe referredto yourinstalleror a
licensedelectricianwho is familiar with the NEC
and/orthe applicablelocalbuilding codesin
yourarea.
When connecting wires to the speakers, be cer-
tain to observe proper polarity. Note that the
positive (+) terminal of each speaker connection
now carries a specific color code as noted on
page 11. However, most speakers will still use a
red terminal for the postive (+) connection.
Connect the "negative" or "black" wire to the
same terminal on both the receiver and the
speaker.
NOTE:While mostspeakermanufacturers
adhereto an industryconventionof using black
terminalsfor negativeand redonesfor positive,
somemanufacturers may varyfrom this config-
uration.To ensureproper phaseand optimal
performance, c onsultthe identificationplate on
yourspeakeror the speaker's manualto verify
polarity. If you do not know the polarity of your
speaker, a skyour dealerfor advicebeforepro-
ceeding,or consultthe speaker's manufacturer.
We also recommendthat the length of cable
usedto connect speakerpairs be identical. For
example, use the same length piece of cable
to connectthe front-left and front-right or
surround-left and surround-right speakers,
even if the speakersare a different distance
from the AVR 520.
8. Connections to a subwooferare normally
madevia a line-levelaudioconnectionfrom the
Subwoofer Output i_ to the line-levelinput
of a subwooferwith a built-in amplifier. W hen a
passive subwooferis used,the connectionfirst
goesto a poweramplifier, which will be con-
nectedto oneor moresubwooferspeakers. I f
you are using a poweredsubwooferthat does
not haveline-levelinput connections, f ollow the
instructionsfurnishedwith the speakerfor con-
nectioninformation.
9. If an externalmulti-channelaudiosource
with 5.1 outputssuch asan externaldigital
processor/decoder, DVD-Audio or SACDplayer
is used,connectthe outputsof that deviceto
the 6-Channel Direct Inputs _.
10. If an externalmulti-channelaudio source
with 7.1 outputssuch asan externaldigital
processor/decoder, DVD-Audio or SACDplayer
is used, first connectthe outputsof that device
to both the 6 ChannelDirect Inputsasnoted
above,andthen connectthe SurroundBackLeft
and SurroundBackRightoutput channelsof
the sourcedeviceto the 8-Channel Direct
Inputs _).
11. If a 7.1 channel source device is connected
as noted in the item above, you must use an
optional audio power amplifier for those chan-
nels. Connect the SBL and SBR Preamp
Outputs
_
to the inputs of the amplifier
feeding those channels' speakers.
Video EquipmentConnections
Videoequipmentis connected in the sameman-
nerasaudio components. Again,the useof high-
quality interconnect c ables is recommended t o
preserve signalquality.
1. Connecta VCR'sor other video source's
audio and video Play/Out j acksto the Video 1
or Video 2 In Jacks_
_ on the rear
panel.TheAudioandVideo Record/In jackson
the VCRshould be connected to the Video 1
or Video 2 Out Jacks_
_
on the
AVR520.
2. Connect the analog audio and video outputs
of a satellite receiver, cable TV converter or
