Operation
IMPORTANTNOTESON DIGITAL
PLAYBACK:
• Whenthe digital playbacksourceis stopped,
or in a pause,fast forward or chaptersearch
mode,the digital audio data will momentarily
stop,andthe channelpositionletters inside the
Speaker/Channel Input Indicators [] will
flash.This isnormaland doesnot indicate a
problemwith either the AVR520 or the source
machine. T heAVR520 will returnto digital
playbackas soonasthe data is availableand
when the machineis in a standard playmode.
• Althoughthe AVR520will decodevirtuallyall
DVDmovies, C Dsand HDTV sources, i t is possi-
ble that somefuture digitalsources may not be
compatible with the AVR520.
• Note that not all digitally encodedprograms
containfull 5.1-channel a udio. Consultthe pro-
gramguidethat accompanies the DVDor laser
discto determinewhich type of audio has been
recordedon the disc.TheAVR520 will auto-
maticallysensethe type of digital surround
encodingusedand adjustto accommodateit.
• Whena digital sourceis playing,you may not
be able to selectsomeof the analog surround
modessuchas DolbyProLogic II, Dolby3,
Stereo,Hall,Theateror Logic7.
• Whena DolbyDigitalor DTSsourceis play-
ing, it is not possibleto makean analog
recordingusing the TapeO and Video 1 or
Video 2 Record Outputs _)_.
However, t he digital signalswill be passed
through to the Digital Audio Outputs _.
PCM Audio Playback
PCM(PulseCodeModulation)is the non-com-
presseddigital audio systemusedfor compact
discsand laserdiscs. T hedigital circuitsinthe
AVR520are capableof high-qualitydigital-to-
analog decoding, a ndthey maybe connected
directlyto the digital audio output of your CD
or LDplayer.

Tolistento a PCMdigital source, f irst selectthe
input for the desiredsource(eig.,CD).Next

the Main Information Display[].
When a PCM source is playing, the PCM indi-
cator []
will light. During PCM playback, you
may select any Surround mode except Dolby
Digital or DTS.When an HDCD-encoded disc is
being played and the DVD or CD player is con-
nected to the AVR 520 via a digital connection,
select Surround Off as the Surround mode to
enjoy the benefits of the HDCD process.
MP3 Audio Playback
TheAVR520 is one of the first A/V receiversto
provideon-boarddecodingfor the MP3audio
format usedby computersand portableaudio
devices. A lso,somenew CD playersarecapable
of playingback optical discsthat are recorded
with MP3,rather than standardCDaudio infor-
mation. Byoffering MP3decoding, t he AVR
520 is able to deliverpreciseconversion of the
digital signalsto an analog output, alongwith
the benefitsof listeningto the MP3audio
through the AVR520's high-currentamplifier
andthe speakers from yoursurroundsystem,
rather than the smallerspeakers and low-pow-
ered amplifierstypicallyusedwith computers.
Totake advantageof the AVR520's MP3capa-
bilities,simplyconnectthe PCMoutput of a
computer'ssoundcard or the PCMoutput of a
portable digital audio deviceto either the rear
panel Digital Inputs _
or the front
panel Digital Inputs i"m_[il. Whenthe digital
signal is available, t he MP3 Bitstream
Indicator []
will light, and the audiowill
begin playing.
NOTES:
• TheAVR520 is only capableof playingsig-
nals in the MP3(MPEGl/Layer 3) format. It is
not compatiblewith other computeraudio
codecs.
• Thedigital audio input signal maybe either
optical or coaxial,but the signal mustbe in the
PCMformat. Directconnectionof USBor serial
data outputs is not possible, e venthoughthe
signalsare in the MP3format. If you haveany
questionsabout the data output format from
your computeror a soundcard, checkwith the
device'sowner'smanualor contactthe manu-
facturer'stechnicalsupportarea.
• If your computer or sound card's digital out-
put is not capable of direct connection to the
AVR, you may use an optional, external
transcoder, such as those available from
Harman Kardon to convert the USBoutput of a
computer to a format compatible with the AVR.
Contact your Harman Kardon dealer for addi-
tional details.
Tuner Operation
TheAVR520'stuner is capableof tuningAM,
FM and FMStereobroadcast s tations.Stations
may be tuned manually,or they may be stored
asfavoritestation presetsand recalled from a
30-position memory.
Station Selection
1. Pressthe AM/FM TunerSelect Button
O_
on the remoteto selectthe tuner as
an input.Thetuner may be selected from the
front panel byeither pressingthe Input
Source Selector []
until the tuner is active
or by pressingthe Tuner Band Selector []
at any time.
2. Press the AM/FM Tuner Select Button

or TunerBand Selector []
again
to switchbetweenAM and FMso that the
desiredfrequencyband is selected.
3. Press t he FM Mode []
or Tun-M Button
to selectmanual o r automatic tuning.
Whenthe AUTOIndicator []
is illuminatedin
the Main Information Display[] the tuner
will only stop at thosestationsthat havea
strongenoughsignalto be received with
acceptable quality.
Whenthe AUTO Indicator [] is not illumin-
ated,the tuner is in a manualmode andwill
stop at eachfrequencyincrementin the select-
ed band.
4. Toselectstations,pressthe Tuning
Selector Button []ql_)@.
Whenthe
AUTOIndicator []
isilluminated, pressthe
button for two secondsandthen releaseto
causethe tunerto searchfor the next highest
or lowest frequencystationthat has an accept-
able signal.Whentuning FM stationsin the
Auto mode,the tuner will onlyselectstereo
stations.Totune to the next station, pressthe
button again. If the STEREO Indicator []
is not illuminated,tap the Tuning Selector
Button []ql_)_
to advanceonefrequency
incrementat a time,or pressand hold it to
locatea specificstation.Whenthe T U NE ])
Indicator []
lights,the station is properly
tuned and shouldbe heardwith clarity.
5. Stationsmay also be tuned directlyby press-
ing the Direct Button q!_), and then pressing
the Numeric Keys _
that correspond to the
station'sfrequency. T hedesiredstation will
automaticallybe tuned. If you pressan incor-
