Manual Output Level Adjustment
Output levelsmayalso be adjustedmanually,
either to set them to a specificlevelwith an
SPLmeter,or to makefine tuning adjustments
to the levelsobtained using the EzSet remote.

Manual output level adjustment is most easily
done through the CHANNEL

menu (Figure 7). If you are already at the main
menu, press the •

(Figure 7) to the screen.
As soonasthe new menu appears,you will
hear a test noisecirculatefrom speakerto
speakerin a clockwisedirectionaround the
room.Thetest noise will playfor two seconds
in eachspeakerbeforecirculating,anda blink-
ing on-screencursorwill appearnext to the
name of eachspeakerlocationwhen the sound
is at that speaker.
NOTE:Remember t o verify that the speakers
havebeenproperlyconnected. A sthe test noise
circulates,listento makecertainthat the sound
comesfrom the speakerpositionshown in the
Main Information Display I_. If the sound
from a speakerlocationdoesNOTmatchthe
position indicated in the display,turn the
AVR520off using the Main Power Switch
[] and check the speakerwiring or connec-
tions to externalpower amplifiersto makecer-
tain that eachspeakeris connectedto the cor-
rect outputterminal.
After checkingfor speakerplacement,let the
test noisecirculateagain,and listento see
which channelssoundlouderthan the others.
Usingthe front left speakeras a reference,
pressthe ,/•
Buttons (i_ _
on the
remoteto bringall speakers to the samevol-
ume level.Whenoneof the ,/•
buttonsis
pushed, t he test noisecirculationwill pauseon
the channelbeingadjustedto give youtime to
makethe adjustment.Whenyou release the
button,the circulationwill resume after five
seconds.
Continueto adjustthe individualchannelsuntil
the volumelevelsoundsthe samefrom each
speaker. N otethat adjustmentsshould be made
with the _i/• Buttons li_
on the remote
only, NOTthe mainvolumecontrols.If you are
using a sound-pressure level(SPL) m eterfor
preciseleveladjustment,set the volumesothat
the meterreads75dB, C-WeightingSlow.
Youmayalso adjustthe output levelsmanually
while using the levelindicationfeature of the
EzSetremote.Toactivatethe sensorand indica-
tor, simplypressand releasethe Program/SPL
Indicator Button _
on the remotewhile
the test tone is circulating.TheProgram/SPL
Indicator _
will changecolorto indicate
the level.Adjustthe levelusingthe _/•
Buttons _
until the LEDlights green
for all channels. Whenit isred, the levelistoo
high;when it isamber,the level istoo low.
Pressthe SPLIndicator Select _

when you arefinishedto turn the sensorand
Indicatoroff.
NOTE:The subwooferoutput levelis not
adjustableusing the test tone.Tochangethe
subwooferlevel,follow the stepsfor Output
Level T rimAdjustmenton page32.
When all channelshavean equalvolume level,
the adjustmentis complete. T oexit this menu,
pressthe A/•

Theoutput levelsmayalso be adjustedat any
time usingthe remotecontrol and semi-OSD
system. T oadjustthe output levelsin this fash-
ion, pressthe Test Button _.
As soonas
the button is pressed, t he test tone will begin
to circulateasindicated earlier. T he correct
channelfrom which the test noiseshouldbe
heardwill be shown in the lower third of the
video screenand in the Main Information
Display []. While the test noise is circulating,
the proper channelpositionwill alsobe
indicatedin the Speaker/ChannelInput
Indicators [] by a blinking letter within the
correctchannel.
Toadjustthe output level,pressthe _/•
Buttons li_
until the desiredlevelis
shown in the displayor on screen.Oncethe
buttonsare released, t he test noisewill begin
to circulateagainin five seconds.
When all channelshavethe sameoutput level,
pressthe Test Tone Selector _
button
againto completethe process.
NOTE:Output leveladjustmentis not available
for the VMAxor SurroundOff mode.
Additional Input Adjustments
After oneinput hasbeenadjustedfor Surround
mode,digital input (if any),speakertype,and
output levels,go backto the T N / 0 UT
SETUP line on the PIASTER MENU and
enterthe settingsfor eachinput that you will
use. In mostcases, o nly the digital input and
surroundmodewill be different from oneinput
to the next,while the speakertype,crossover
frequency,Night mode andoutput levelset-
tings will usuallybe the sameandmay be
quicklyenteredby enteringthe samedata used
for the original input.
Oncethe settingsoutlined on the previous
pageshavebeenmade,the AVR520 is ready
for operation.While there aresomeadditional
settingsto be made,theseare best done after
you havehad an opportunityto listento a vari-
ety of sourcesanddifferent kinds of program
material.Theseadvancedsettingsare described
on pages34 to 35 of this manual.In addition,
any of the settingsmadein the initial configu-
ration of the unit maybe changedat anytime.
As you add new or different sources or speak-
ers,or if you wish to changea settingto better
reflect yourlisteningtaste,simplyfollow the
instructionsfor changingthe settingsfor that
parameterasshown in this section.
