System Configuration
Making this selectionwill setthe surround
mode optionsfor the AVRso that onlythe cor-
rect modesfor the numberof speakersin your
specificsystemwill be available.Shouldyou
changeyour systemand add additionalspeak-
ers at a later date, it is importantto changethis
setting sothat advanced surroundmodessuch
as Logic7/7.1 and DTS-ES 6.1 Discreteand
Matrix will be available.
Whenthe desiredselectionis made,pressthe
Set Button @ to continuewith the setup
and configuration.
Oncethe setting is madefor 5.1 or 6.1/7.1
operation,the default surroundmode for an
input should be set. Eachof the remainingfive
lineson the menu (Figure3) containsthe vari-
ous surroundmodecategories, a nd within
those menusyou maychooseone of the sub-
modes.Notethat the list of specificsub-modes
in somecategorieswill varyaccordingto
whether 5.1 or 6.1/7.1 operationis chosen.In
addition,someof the modesavailablein the
AVR520will not appearunlessa digital source
is selectedand playingthe correctbitstream.
Toselectthe modethat will be usedasthe ini-
tial default for an input, first pressthe A/•
Buttons _
until the on-screencursoris next
to the desiredmode'smastercategoryname.
Next, pressthe Set Button @ to view the
sub-menu.Pressthe ,/•

scrollthrough the availablechoices, a nd then

sothat the cursoris
next to BACK TO MASTER MENU to
continuethe setup process.
On the Do i by menu(Figure4), the selection
choicesincludeDolbyDigital, DolbyProLogicII
Music, DolbyProLogicII Cinema,DolbyPro
Logic II Emulationand Dolby3 Stereo. A com-
plete explanationof thesemodesis found on
Page26. Notethat when the DolbyDigital
mode is selectedthereare additionalsettings
availablefor the Night mode.

The Night mode is a feature of DolbyDigital
that usesspecialprocessing to preservethe
dynamicrangeandfull intelligibility of a movie
soundtrack while reducingthe peaklevel.This
prevents abruptly loud transitionsfrom disturb-
ing others,without reducingthe sonicimpact of
a digital source.Notethat the Night modeis
only availablewhen speciallyencodedDolby
Digitalsignalsare played.
Toadjustthe Night mode settingfor an input
from the menu,makecertain that the • cursor
is on the NIGHT
line of the DOLBY menu.

betweenthe following settings,asthey appear
in the on-screendisplay:
OFF: When OFF is highlighted,the Night
modewill not function.
MID: When MID is highlighted,a mild com-
pressionwill be applied.
MAX: When MAX is highlighted,a more
severecompressionalgorithmwill be applied.
We recommend that you selectthe MI D set-
ting asa starting point and changeto the
MAX setting later,if desired.
Notethat the Night modemay be adjusted
directlyany time that a DolbyDigitalsourceis
playingbypressingthe Night Button li_!_.
When the button is pressed, t he phrase
D - RANGE will appearin the lower third of
the video screenand in the Main Information
DisplayI_. Press the A/v Button i_) with-
in threeseconds to selectthe desiredsetting.
When all settingsfor the surroundsetup have
beenmade,pressthe A/v Buttons _
so
that the • cursoris next to BACK TO
MAS T E R MEN U, and pressthe Set Button
to returnto the Ma s t e r menu.
Onthe D T S menu,the selectionchoicesmade
with the _i/• Buttons _
on the remote
are determinedbya combinationof the type of
DTSprogrammaterialin useand whetherthe
5.1 or 6.1/7.1 speakeroutput configurationis
in use.When either of the speakerconfigura-
tions is in use,you mayselecteither the Neo:6
Musicor Neo:6Cinemamodewhen an analog
sourceis playingto deliveran enhanced5.1-
channelsoundfield.
When the 5.1 configurationis in usethe AVR
will automaticallyselectthe 5.1 versionof DTS
processing when a DTSdata streamis selected.
Whenthe 6.1/7.1 modeis selected, t he DTS-ES
Discretemode will automaticallybe activated
when a DTSsourcewith the ESDiscrete"flag"
is in use.In thesecasesthe DTS-ESMode
Indicator [] will light. When a non-ESDTS
discis in use,you mayselectthe DTS-ES Matrix
modethrough this menuto createa full eight-
speakersurroundmode.Seepage26 for a
completeexplanationof the DTS modes.
Onthe L o g i c 7 menu,the selectionchoices
madewith the _/• Buttons qi]_
on the
remoteare determinedbywhetherthe 5.1 or
6.1/7.1 speakeroutput configurationis in use.
In either case,the selectionof a Logic7 mode
enablesHarmanKardon'sexclusiveLogic7 pro-
cessing to createfully enveloping,multichannel
surroundfrom eithertwo-channel Stereoor
Matrix-encodedprogrammingsuchasVHScas-
settes,laserdiscsor televisionbroadcasts pro-
ducedwith Dolbysurround.
In the 5.1 configurationyou may selectthe
Logic7/5.1 Music,Cinemaor Enhanced modes.
Theywork best with two-channel music,sur-
round-encoded programsor standardtwo-
channelprogrammingof anytype, respectively.
Whenthe 6.1/7.1 modeis selected, o nly the
Musicand Cinemamodesare available,andthe
output will be in a full eight-channel s ound
field. Notethat the Logic7 modesarenot
availablewhen either DolbyDigitalor DTS
Digitalsoundtracksare in use.Seepages26

Surroundmodes.
Onthe DSP
( SURR ) menu,the selection
choicesmade with the _/•
Buttons _
on the remoteselectfrom one of the DSPsur-
round modesthat aredesignedfor usewith
two-channelstereoprogramsto createa variety
of soundfield presentations. The choicesavail-
able are Hall 1, Hall2, Theater, V MAxNearand
VMAxFar. T he Hall andTheatermodesare
designedfor multichannelinstallations,while
the two VMAxmodesare optimizedfor usein
deliveringa full surroundfield when onlythe
front left andfront right speakers are installed.

off for a traditional two-channel stereopresen-
