TROUBLESHOOTING

Symptom
Engine misfire with
Loose or improperly installed engine flywheel.
abnormal internal
lower engine noises.
Worn piston rings.
(Oil consumption may or may not cause the
engine to misfire.)
Worn crankshaft thrust bearings.
Engine misfire with
Stuck valves.
abnormal valve train
(Carbon buildup on the valve stem can cause

Excessive worn or mis-aligned timing chain.
Worn camshaft lobes.
Engine misfire with
•• Faulty cylinder head gasket and/or cracking
coolant consumption
or other damage to the cylinder head and
engine block cooling system.

the engine to overheat.
Engine misfire with
Worn valves, valve guides and/or valve stem oil
excessive oil

sprocket as required.
Replace the camshaft and valve
lifters.
•• Inspect the cylinder head and
engine block for damage to the
coolant passages and/or a faulty
head gasket.
•• Repair or replace as required.
Repair or replace as required.
Inspect the cylinder for a loss of
compression
Repair or replace as required.
Drain the oil.
Refill with the correct viscosity oil.
Inspect the thrust bearing and
crankshaft.
Repair or replace as required.
Repair or replace as required.
Replace the valve spring.
Replace the valve lifters.
Replace the timing chain and
sprockets.
Replace the timing chain tensioner
as required.
Inspect the camshaft lobes.
Replace the camshaft and valve
