THE IGNITER SYSTEM consistsof a gascollector,electrode,wire and igniter(sideburners
includea secondelectrodewith wire). Gas accumulating in thegas collectoris ignitedby an
electricspark generatedwhenthe igniterunitis activated. The sparkgap is automatically set
whenthe electrodeis installed. Theigniterwireshouldbe kept a minimumof 3" belowthe grill
bottomso that the heatwon'tdamagethe wire.
TESTING THE IGNITER SYSTEM:
BE SURE CONTROL KNOB VALVE(S) ARE OFF AND PROCEED AS FOLOWS:
Usinga handmirror,watchthe electrode tip insidethe gas collectorwhile activating the igniter.
Toavoida possibleshock, DO NOTtouch the burneror metalparts on ignitorsystemwhile
performing ignitertest. A visible sparkshouldjump from the electrode. See the representative
illustrationin Fig. 32. If thereisn'ta spark,checkthe wire connections and see that the electrode
isn't broken. It is normalfor the wireto fit looselyinsidethe porcelain.Dirt and ruston the
burneror ignitercan preventthe igniterspark. Cleanthemwith a de-greaseror warm soapy
waterand dry. Removerustfrom electrodetip and metal surfacesby lightlysandingwith an
emerycloth or finegrain sandpaper.
