Piston Rod Safety

WARNING
INJECTION AND HOT MATERIAL
HAZARDS
To reduce the risk of serious injury from
fluid injection or contact with hot materi-
al, do not operate a gun with a piston rod safety
that is not functioning properly. Replace the safety
before operating again.
If you do not feel a definite stop in either the locked or
unlocked position when using the piston rod safety,
replace it. Replacement should not be required more
often than standard maintenance, about every 1.5 mil-
lion cycles.
NOTE: A Repair Kit, part no. 237–622, is available.
See page 33.
1. Remove the gun from the production line as
instructed on page 18.
2. Remove the screws (39) and the cover (2a) from
the back of the gun. See Fig. 32, page 22.
NOTE: Removing the cover will unplug the trigger
switch electrical connector (Q) and may cause the
spool return spring (7a) to fall out of place.
3. Unlock the piston rod safety (C). See Fig. 33, page
22. Remove the air valve piston assembly (K), us-
ing the piston removal tool (BB) to push it out the
back of the gun. Be careful not to gouge the inside
walls of the gun.
4. Remove the set screw (1e), spring (1d), and ball
(1c) from the piston bore, using a 5/64" allen
wrench. See Fig. 37.
5. Remove the cap (1b) and safety slide (1a); replace
the parts if necessary.
6. Apply lubricant to the safety slide (1a), and insert it
into the slots with the detented edge facing the
back of the gun.
7. Apply a low-strength adhesive (such as purple
Loctite ) to the cap (1b) threads, and screw it onto
the gun body until it bottoms out.
8. Install the ball (1c), spring (1d), and set screw (1e)
into the piston bore. See Fig. 38. Tighten the set
screw until it is flush with the piston bore.
Service
Install the set screw flush with the piston bore. Do
not tighten the set screw to bottom as this will
make the safety difficult to slide. However, if the
set screw is not inserted far enough, it will protrude
into the piston operating area and affect the pis-
tons normal closed position, which will cause pre-
mature wear on the piston and gun failure.
9. If no further maintenance or service is required,
install the piston assembly as instructed on page
23.
10. Assemble the gun as instructed on page 28.
