Figure C–2. Sample arm
To reassemble, follow instructions in
above.
Sample Tube Seals
As noted in above, removal of the sample arm exposes the
sample tube rotary seals. If the sample tube is to be removed for
any reason, this should be done as it is then easier to remove
these seals for inspection. Remove the seals being careful not to
distort them in the process and check their condition.
A polished region should be visible in the central bore, where the
sample tube has been running. No other signs of wear should be
evident. Also check the surface of the sample tube which
protrudes out of the end of the main shaft. There may be some
slight deposit on the sealing surface due to material worn from
the seals. This can be wiped off with a tissue moistened with
isopropanol. The surface should appear highly polished. Replace
any worn or damaged parts. Reassembly is the reverse of
disassembly.
Main Shaft Seals
Follow the procedure above to point of removal of the sample
arm.
Remove the six screws holding the main shaft seal retaining ring
in place (the six screws can be seen when looking into the RMS
exhaust chamber), and withdraw the retaining ring. The seal is
now visible.
