Scheduled work
With the machine stabled on rubber tyres, free
the hydrostatic rail wheel drive by removing the

centre cap, inverting and re-installing as
instructed in OM.11.13
Clean the rail wheels, in particular, the tread and

flange.
Rotate the rail wheel by hand and check for
3
excessive axial and radial movement.
Maximum permissible float is 1.0mm
Examine the tread and flange as defined in:
Rail Industry Standard

Measure diameter of tread

Repeat for each rail wheel.
Note(s):
- Use of a profile gauge is not recommended as this will give incorrect results; independently driven hydrostatic
wheels can rotate at different speeds, unlike a conventional fixed axle. This increases braking efficiency and
traction but does create root migration which is often mistakenly identified as wear. The material is moved
from the flange root radius out onto the tread and up onto the flange.

If float is greater than maximum permissible

wear, renew torque hub.

Record findings in log book

Re-profile to S8 C2-8006234 or renew as required

Carry out Job No. ChasRWE (Rail wheel examine)
Record in log book, if measurement is less than

530.0mm (10.0mm less than nominal) – renew
wheel.
Wheels on the same 'axle' should not have a
5
difference of more than 5.0mm diameter.
