6. If one or more rod ends were loosened or replaced,
check steering adjustment as described in this chapter.
SHOCK ABSORBER
Adjustment
Each front shock absorber is equipped with a threaded
collar below the coil spring. Rotating the collar adjusts
spring pressure. Rotate the collar toward the spring to in-
crease spring pressure.

Refer to Figure 5.
1. Open the shroud.
Remove the lower shock absorber mounting bolt (B,
Figure 15) and upper shock absorber mounting bolt (Fig-
ure 18). Remove the shock absorber.

3. Inspect the shock absorber as described in this chapter.
4. Installation is the reverse of the preceding steps.
Tighten the shock absorber bolts to 48 N*m (35 ft.-lb.).
Spring
Refer to Figure 5.
1. Remove the shock absorber as described in this ehap-
ter.
2. Secure the bottom of the shock absorber in a vise with
soft jaws.
3. Turn the spring adjuster to its softest position.
WARNING
Do not remove
install the shock spring
or
without the use of a spring compressor. At-
tempting to remove the spring without using
a spring compressor may cause severe in-
jury. I f a spring compressor is not on hand,
refer spring removal to a Yamaha dealer-
ship.
4. Install a spring compressor onto the shock absorber
following the manufacturer's instructions. Then compress
the spring with the tool and remove the spring stopper
from the top of the shock. Remove the spring.
Do not attempt to disassemble the shock ab-
sorber housing.
5. Inspect the shock and spring as described in the fol-
lowing procedure.
6. On VX600SXB, and VX700SXB models the upper
end of the shock is retained by a removable bracket. See
Figure 19. Make sure the bracket is secure. Tighten the
bracket bolts to 50 K*m (36 ft.-lb.).
7. Installation is the reverse of the preceding steps. Make
sure the spring stopper secures the spring completely.
Shock Inspection
1. Remove the shock spring as described in this chapter.
2. Clean all components thoroughly in solvent and allow
to dry.
3. Check the damper rod as follows:
a. Check the shock absorber housing for leakage. If
the shock absorber is leaking, replace it.

c. Operate the shock absorber by hand and check its
operation. If the shock absorber is operating cor-
