clearance exceeds the service limit specified in Table 2 or
Table 3, replace the big-end bearing and connecting rod.
5. Support the crankshaft on V-blocks so it can be rotated
while inspecting it.
NOTE
The V-blocks can be made of hardwood to
perform the following checks.
6. Rotate each connecting rod around the crankshaft by
hand, while checking for excessive noise or roughness.
7. Carefully examine the condition of the crankshaft
main bearings. Clean the bearings with solvent and allow
them to dry thoroughly. Lubricate each bearing with en-
gine oil, then check it by rolling the bearing by hand.
Make sure it turns quietly and smoothly. There must not
be any rough spots or apparent radial play. Replace defec-
tive bearings.
8. Inspect the center gear (Figure 64) for cracks, deep
scoring or excessive wear. If the center gear is damaged,
check the gear (Figure 65) on the coolant pump and injee-
damaged while the other is in good condition, replace
both gears.
NOTE
The bearings installed on the outer ends of
the crankshaft can be replaced as described
under Crankshaft Bearing Replacement in
this chapter. To replace the bearings, seals
and central gear installed between the
