10. Loosen the crankcase screws in two or more stages by
reversing the sequence shown in Figure 53. Remove all
crankcase screws, including the outer screws not shown in
Figure 53.
CAUTION
Do not
the cases apart with a screw-
pry'
driver or any other sharp tool; othemise the
sealing surface becomes damaged.
11. Tap on the large bolt bosses with a soft mallet to break
the crankcase halves apart. Then remove the bottom half
(B, Figure 52).
12. Lift the crankshaft (Figure 54) from the upper crank-
case half and carefully set it aside so the connecting rods
will not be damaged. Block the crankshaft on the wosk-
bench so it cannot roll off.
If necessary, remove the coolant pump and oil injec-
tion pump driveshaft as described in this chapter.
Cleaning
1. Clean both crankcase halves with cleaning solvent.
Thoroughly dry with compressed air and wipe off with a
clean shop cloth. Make sure to remove all traces of old
sealer from the mating surfaces.
2. Clean all the oil passages in the crankcase, then blow
the passages out with compressed air.
CAUTION
Make sure the cleaning solvent used to
clean the crankshaft is clean. Ifany dirt en-
ters the close clearances of the bearings
while cleaning, it becomes difficzdt to re-
move and can cause bearing damage.
3. Clean the crankshaft assembly in solvent and dry with
compressed air. Lubricate the bearings with injection oil
to prevent rusting.
Crankcase Inspection
1. Carefully inspect the case halves for cracks and frac-
tures. Also check the areas around the stiffening ribs,
around bearing bosses and all the threaded holes. If any
damage is discovered, have it repaired by a shop speeial-
izing in the repair of precision aluminum castings or re-
place the crankcase.
2. Check the mating surfaces of the crankcase halves for
high spots, burrs or any roughness that would interfere
with sealing. The following procedure can be used to
check the sealing surfaces and to remove small localized
high spots.
