16. Perform Final Leak Test using the MSD Manual Tune Screen

The final leak test depends on the type of source installed in the MSD.
This leak test consists of spraying the fittings with Freon 134a, a fluorocarbon
refrigerant with a prominent fragment at m/z 83, while monitoring selected
masses with the MSD. If the selected mass peaks appear (rise, then fall), the
fitting under test is leaking.
Freon 134a refrigerant is available in an aerosol can under various names
(Quick-Freeze, Dust Off, etc.). This example uses Quick-Freeze, available from
the Miller-Stephenson Chemical Company of Danbury CT, USA. This or similar
products may be available from automobile supply (refrigerant recharge),
computer repair (dust removal), photography (dust removers), and electronics
supply stores (for cooling soldered circuits).
If you choose to use a test spray of alternate composition, you will have to
determine a suitable fragment peak yourself.
