Typical example
3. Clean sealing surface (2).
4. Apply clean engine oil to O ring seal (3) for the new
oil filter.
NOTICE
Do not fill the oil filters with oil before installing them.
This oil would not be filtered and could be contami-
nated. Contaminated oil can cause accelerated wear
to engine components or engine damage.
5. Install the new oil filter. Spin on the oil filter until the
O ring contacts the sealing surface (2). Then
rotate the oil filter ¾ of a full turn.
Fill the Oil Pan
1. Remove the oil filler cap. Refer to this Operation
and Maintenance Manual, "Fluid
Recommendations" for more information on
suitable oils. Fill the oil pan with the correct
amount of new engine lubricating oil. Refer to this
Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill
Capacities" for more information on refill
capacities.
NOTICE
If equipped with an auxiliary oil filter system or a re-
mote filter system, follow the OEM or the filter manu-
factures recommendations. Under-filling or over filling
the crankcase with oil can cause engine damage.
2. Start the engine and run the engine at "LOW IDLE"
for 2 minutes. Perform this procedure to ensure
that the lubrication system has oil and that the oil
filters are filled. Inspect the oil filter for oil leaks.
3. Stop the engine and allow the oil to drain back to
the oil pan for a minimum of 10 minutes.

4. Remove the engine oil level gauge to check the oil
level. Maintain the oil level between the "L" and "H"
marks on the engine oil level gauge. Do not fill the
crankcase above the "H" mark.
Engine Storage Procedure -
Check
Engine
Perkins recommends storage procedures and start-
up procedures for all engines that are stored for more
than 1 month. These procedures provide maximum
protection to internal engine components.
An extension of the oil change interval to 12 months
is permitted if you follow the required procedures for
storage and start-up. This extension is permitted if
the following intervals in the Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval
Schedule" have not been reached:
• Operating hours
• Fuel consumption
Perkins recommends the use of Volatile Corrosion
Inhibitors (VCI) oil to prevent internal engine damage
due to moisture during storage. These inhibitors act
by evaporating inside the engine, then condensing
over the inside surfaces.
