About Smart Flow

The aspirator is equipped with Smart Flow that reduces the noise and power usage when the device is
not actively aspirating fluid or debris. The optional feature is available only when the aspirator is
operating in Continuous mode.
Smart Flow works by using a constant low flow to detect when the user applies suction. It does
this by measuring the vacuum level (pressure) change that results when the resistance at the end
of the suction catheter changes. When the vacuum level drops below the threshold, the vacuum
pump increases its speed (RPM) to reach the intended vacuum level target. When suctioning is
removed, the vacuum level drops below the threshold and the vacuum pump continues
operation for a few more seconds to clear the suction catheter and tubing. Since the resistance
of suction setup and catheters can vary, Smart Flow may require calibration so that it performs
as intended with different accessories, see "About Smart Flow Calibration", below.
Users can turn Smart Flow ON or OFF in Continuous mode when surgical, pharyngeal or
tracheal procedures are active. During CASS or when the set vacuum level is less than
50 mm Hg in Continuous mode Smart Flow is not displayed
When Smart Flow is ON, it can take 1 to 3 seconds for the system to detect use and ramp up the
vacuum pump. If immediate vacuum is required do not use Smart Flow. In instances where
suction may be needed, turning OFF Smart Flow and placing the aspirator in Standby state will
minimize noise and reduce power while still maintaining the ability to quickly provide suction.

About Smart Flow Calibration

To ensure that the Smart Flow feature works properly for your application and accessory
package, Smart Flow may need calibration. During calibration the aspirator should be in the
Continuous mode operational state.
Warning!
Do not calibrate Smart Flow when the aspirator is in-use with a patient.
To perform calibration, follow these steps.
1. Connect ALL accessories that will be used during aspiration. Ensure that the vacuum
accessories are not occluded and open to the air.
