Do you have sites that you must monitor outside of your LAN?
Extending LAN to the site or running long serial lines can be
very expensive projects. Fortunately, there's a much better way
that involves only short serial connections between sites.
Using the serial ports on your NetGuardian, you can actually
monitor a second NetGuardian deployed outside of your LAN
via Serial. This eliminates long, expensive cable runs.

  • Page 2 Troubleshooting Checklist Set up a Polling Port for Both NetGuardians in T/Mon NOTE: In the example below, the same polling port has been used for both NetGuardians. However, if you are setting more than 2 NetGuardians over serial connection, it is recommended that the NetGuardians have their own polling port to ensure timely polling.
  • Page 3 Set up NetGuardians in T/Mon. o Press ‘ESC’ several times until you return to the Master Menu. o Select ‘LAN Based remotes’ o Press ‘F’ for Find o Type in the site number of your LAN NetGuardian and press “Enter” o Configure the NetGuardian as appropriate, including an IP address and TCP Port The first NetGuardian below is the LAN NGD, on the next page you will find the setup instructions for the Serial NGD.
  • Page 4 o Press ‘F’ for Find o Type in the site number for your Serial NetGuardian and press ‘Enter’ o Configure the NetGuardian as appropriate, using the same IP address of the first unit BUT a different TCP Port. The TCP Port you use for the serial NetGuardian must match the proxy port of the LAN NetGuardian that the Serial NetGuardian is connected to.
