Risk of injury
There is a risk of acid burns when jump-start-
ing a vehicle due to the gases which escape
from the battery. Do not lean over the battery
while the engine is being jump-started.

Risk of explosion
Gases escaping from the battery during jump-
starting may cause minor explosions. Avoid
creating sparks. Keep naked flames away
from the battery, and do not smoke.
Comply with safety precautions and take pro-
tective measures when handling batteries.
Slide cover : of positive terminal ; in

the direction of the arrow.
Connect positive terminal ; on your vehi-
X
cle to positive terminal = of donor battery
B using the jump lead, beginning with your
own battery.
Start the engine of the donor vehicle and
X
run it at idling speed.
Connect negative terminal ? of donor bat-
X
tery B to earth point A of your vehicle
using the jump lead, connecting the jump
lead to donor battery B first.
Start the engine.

Make sure that the two vehicles do not

touch.
Apply the parking brake firmly.

Manual transmission: engage neutral.
X
Automatic transmission*: shift the trans-
X
mission to position P.
Switch off all electrical consumers (e.g.

radio, blower, etc.).
Open the bonnet (
X

First, remove the jump lead from earth
X
point A and negative terminal ?, then
from positive terminal ; and positive ter-
minal =, each time disconnecting from the
battery on your own vehicle first.
Have the battery checked at a qualified

specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre.
