On vehicles with steering wheel gearshift
paddles*, you can restrict or derestrict the
shift range in the same way as with Touch-
shift ( page 103).

The program selector button allows you to
choose between different driving character-
istics.
C Comfort
S Sport
Press program selector button : repeat-

edly until the letter for the desired gearshift
program C or S appears in the multifunction
display.

Regardless of whether automatic drive
program C or S is selected, the automatic
transmission always switches to drive pro-
gram C when you next start the engine.
Drive program C is characterised by the fol-
lowing:
comfort-oriented engine and suspension

settings
optimal fuel consumption resulting from
R
the automatic transmission shifting up
sooner
the vehicle pulling away more gently in
R
forward and reverse gears, unless the
accelerator pedal is depressed fully
comfortable, economical
driving
sporty driving style
increased sensitivity; this improves driving
R
stability on slippery road surfaces, for
example
the automatic transmission shifting up
R
sooner, which results in the vehicle being
driven at lower engine speeds and the
wheels being less likely to spin
Drive program S is characterised by the fol-
lowing:
sporty engine and suspension configura-

tion
the vehicle pulling away in first gear
R
the automatic transmission shifting up
R
later
as a result of the later automatic transmis-
R
sion shift points, the fuel consumption may
be higher
Driving tips
Accelerator pedal position
Your style of driving influences how the auto-
matic transmission shifts gear:
little throttle: early upshifts
R
more throttle: late upshifts
R
Double-clutch function
E 350 and E 500 only: when shifting down,
the double-clutch function is active regard-
less of the currently selected drive program.
The double-clutch function reduces load
change reactions and is conducive to a sporty
driving style. The sound generated by the
double-clutch function depends on the drive
program selected.
