ACQ
Acquisition burst, used by the SIT to log on to the satellite network.
AGC
Automatic Gain Control.
Alarm A non-recoverable fault in the IDU that requires user intervention.
BUC
See Transmitter.
CRA
Continuous rate assignment. The return link rate capacity which is provided in full for
each and every superframe while required.
CSC
Common signalling channel burst, used by the SIT to log on to the satellite network.
dB Decibel.
dBm
Decibel milliwatts. A logarithmic measure of power, referenced to 1 milliwatt (1 mW = 0
dBm).
dBW Decibel watts. A logarithmic measure of power referenced to 1 watt (1 W = 0 dBW).
DVB-RCS
Digital Video Broadcast-Return Channel System. An open standard for providing two-
way broadband access over satellite.
Eb/No
Signal to noise ratio.
EIRP Effective isotropic radiated power. A measure of the amount of power radiated by the
ODU.
Error A problem with the IDU that does not require user intervention.
ESD
Electro-static discharge.
FCA
Free capacity assignment. The return link volume capacity which is assigned to the IDU
from capacity which would be otherwise unused.
Filter pattern
A set of criteria applied to all data received from a local PC or LAN. Filter patterns can be
used to assign data to traffic queues (see Queue). They can also be used to block data from
being transmitted over the satellite network.

Forward link.
Forward link
The path carrying communication from a hub (or gateway), via satellite, to SITs. It is
based on the DVB/MPEG standard.
