Daily inspection of the bus

Daily inspection of the bus
The chapter on maintenance contains
information on the preventive work
needs to ensure the bus maintains a
roadworthy condition, is safe and
reliable.
However, the instructions in this section
are not exhaustive. Many more items are
included in the service that an authorised
Volvo workshop carries out.
Contact an authorised Volvo workshop
for full information about lubrication
points, oils and fluids, service intervals
and service contracts.
Daily check
The daily inspection of the bus is
important to help detect any faults, and
to avoid unplanned downtime.
Instrument cluster and driver
information display
Ensure no warning and indicator lamps
are lit in the instrument cluster nor any
faults stored in the driver information
display.
Fluid levels
Check the following fluid levels:
washer fluid
coolant
engine oil
102
hydraulic oil
The fluid level should be between the
minimum and maximum marks on the
fluid reservoirs. Top up when necessary.
Washer fluid
Windscreen cleaning and headlamp
cleaning have a common tank. Top up
when neccessary. Use Volvo's washer
fluid. When the level drops to the lowest
alarm level, the headlamp washing is
switched off in favour of windscreen
washing.
Coolant
Check the coolant level. If necessary, top
up with Volvo Coolant VCS.
It is important to use a minimum of 40%
concentrated Volvo Coolant VCS in the
cooling system, even if there is no risk of
freezing. Coolant prevents corrosion and
deposits.
In colder climate conditions, use a higher
concentration of coolant as specified by
VCS. Consult a Volvo workshop for
advice.
Engine oil
In addition to checking the engine oil
level in the driver information display, the
level should also be checked manually
using the oil dipstick.
Hydraulic oil
Check the hydraulic oil level for the
cooling-fan drive and steering servo.
Air tanks
Pull the air tank valve rings in order to
check that there is no condensation in
the air tanks. Water in the air tanks is a
sign that the air drier is not working.
Tyres
Check that the tyres are inflated to the
correct pressures and that they are in
good condition. Inspect between twin-
mounted rear wheels to make sure there
are no stones stuck between the wheels.
Leakage
Check that there are no traces of oil, fuel
or coolant leaks underneath the bus.
Safety equipment
Inspect that the bus' safety equipment
such as fire extinguishers, first-aid kit,
warning triangle, and glass hammer are
in place and working order.
Visual inspection
Windows and rear view mirrors must be
intact and clean. Headlamps and other
lighting must be in working order. Check
the condition of glass lenses, and mirror
glass. Test the direction indicators as
well as the windscreen wipers.
