Working on the electrical
system
NOTE
Work on the electrical system should be
performed by a Volvo workshop.
The following points must be observed
when working on the electrical system:
When working on the bus' electrical
system, the batteries must be
isolated by disconnecting the
negative terminal.
Never operate the alternator with the
battery disconnected. The batteries
and alternator must not be
disconnected while the engine is
running.
The negative terminal on the battery
should always be disconnected first,
and connected last, e.g. when
replacing a battery. This will reduce
the risk of short circuits and sparks,
which could be dangerous due to
oxyhydrogen gas.
When fitting batteries, make sure
they are connected correctly.
The parking brake cannot be
operated when the batteries are
disconnected.
Turn off the main switch when
replacing a fuse.
Always use the prescribed fuse size.
CAUTION
Start aid units must not be connected, as
these can produce very high voltage
levels, which in turn can damage control
units.
Connecting electrical
equipment
When connecting electrical equipment,
make sure that the bus' electrical system
is dimensioned for the equipment.
Several common pieces of equipment
require a lot of power and can only be
connected to a circuit that is
dimensioned for this.
NOTE
Generally, Volvo advises against installing
electrical equipment without support from
a Volvo workshop.
When connecting electrical equipment,
keep in mind:
Always use the prescribed fuse size
and correct cable area. Dimension
continuous load on the fuses to a
maximum of 70% of their rated
current.
The power must always be turned off
before any work on the electrical
system.

Electrical system

Always use original Volvo connectors
(terminals, insulators, fuses, etc.).
CAUTION
There is a risk of fire if fuses are too large.
