Batteries

The batteries play an important role in
the general functioning of the vehicle,
especially since vehicles are equipped
with more energy consuming appliances.
Consumer batteries
The bus is fitted with a pair of consumer
batteries. The batteries' service life is
highly dependent on the maintenance of
the battery. Battery condition and state of
charge must be checked regularly to
prevent unnecessary breakdowns.
Starter batteries
To meet the needs of modern electrical
equipment in buses, the system
comprises two consumer batteries, two
starter batteries and a battery charger.
The battery charger is connected
between the starter batteries and
consumer batteries and ensures that the
starter batteries always are fully charged.
WARNING
There is still voltage in the starter batteries
even when the battery main switch is
disengaged.
To secure that the bus is not energised,
disconnect the cables on all battery
terminals.
Normal charging
The bus alternator can never charge the
battery to 100%. To achieve full charge,
the battery must be charged with a
higher voltage than normal.
NOTE
Always check battery state of charge with
a battery analyser, before charging.
CAUTION
Always use a battery charger with a
voltage limiter. The vehicle electronics and
batteries can be damaged if there is no
voltage limiter.
The charging time can be affected by
following parameters:
Battery state of charge
Size of the battery
Battery temperature
CAUTION
To avoid overvoltage in the bus power
consumers, first turn off the main switch
and then the battery main switch.
If the consumer battery capacity is too
low, the engine can't start. Connect a 24
V external supply and start the engine.

Starting assistance
WARNING
Batteries contain oxyhydrogen gas, which
is highly explosive. A spark, which can be
generated when connecting starting cables
incorrectly or if they are moved around
during the starting procedure. It is
sufficient for the battery to explode and
cause serious damage and injury.
Low capacity in the batteries
Connect extra batteries or another
power source to the consumer
batteries.
Low capacity in the batteries
Connect extra batteries or another
power source to the consumer
batteries. The starter batteries must
be charged sufficiently to start the
engine.
To start the engine immediately,
connect extra batteries or another
power source to the consumer
batteries and the starter batteries.
Low capacity in the starter batteries
If the consumer batteries are charged
but the starter batteries are discharged,
there may be a faulty component.
