AdBlue

AdBlue
The urea solution is sold under the
AdBlue brand name. It is a colourless
liquid consisting of urea and distilled
water. It may have a slight odour of
ammonia. The concentration of urea in
AdBlue is 32.5%. AdBlue fulfils the ISO
standard 22241-1 (formerly DIN 70070).
It is the only urea solution approved by
Volvo for filling in Volvo's buses. AdBlue
can also be marketed under other names
depending on the distributor and can be
used as long as ISO standard 22241-1 is
fulfilled.
Refilling and consumption
Always check the AdBlue level in
connection with refuelling. Consumption
is affected by driving style but is normally
approx. 8% of diesel consumption.
Example: 100 litres of diesel
consumption results in approx. 8 litres of
AdBlue consumption.
CAUTION
AdBlue that is modified or replaced with
another liquid that does not conform to
ISO 22241-1 must not be used. This may
cause the intended cleaning effect of the
exhaust gas is lost and damage to the
SCR system.
Refuelling
Always check the AdBlue level in
connection with refuelling.

Handling and spillage
AdBlue is not dangerous but should be
handled with caution.
If AdBlue is accidentally spilled on the
bus, rinse with water and then wipe with
paper or a cloth. The solution can be
aggressive when it gets hot and can
damage e.g. adjacent connectors, cables
and hoses in the event of leaks.
AdBlue freezes at approx. -11 °C. This is
generally not a problem since the SCR
system is heated. The bus can still be
started and driven as usual.
CAUTION
AdBlue is highly corrosive and may
damage connectors. If AdBlue enters
connectors and cables, these must be
replaced since cleaning is insufficient.
Exhaust gas cleaning
When the engine is switched off a
process is started to pump clean the
AdBlue nozzles and AdBlue lines. The
process takes approx. 90 seconds and
during this time the main switch must be
on. This is particularly important when it
is cold outside, as there is a risk of the
solution freezing. This process is not
carried out if the main switch is used
before or during the process.
CAUTION
Wait before turning off the battery main
switch and the main switch for at least 5
minutes after the engine has been turned
off to allow the cleaning process to be
completed, otherwise the AdBlue solution
in the SCR system can freezing at low
temperatures.
