Regeneration

General
During normal engine operation, by-
products from engine combustion are
collected in the exhaust after treatment
system (EATS).
Soot, ash and sulphur are regularly
removed from EATS by a regeneration
process.
The regeneration is performed to prevent
increased wear and tear on the engine,
as well as reduce the risk of damage to
both the engine and EATS.
If an excessive amount of ash is
collected in the diesel particulate filter
(DPF), the filter must be replaced.
Low sulphur in the fuel increases the
time intervals for regeneration.
NOTE
Sulphur level lower than 10 ppm in fuel is
essential.
Example of standard used:
EN590 (with nationally adapted cold
requirements).
Moving regeneration
The regeneration is performed via a
special engine-mode to raise the exhaust
temperature until the soot and the
132
sulphur have combusted while driving,
no driver action needed.
A status symbol for high exhaust
temperature is shown. The symbol
disappears when the process is
completed.
High performance instrument version.
Parked regeneration
Parked regeneration can only be started
by the driver or a technician via the
display menu when the bus is parked. A
message in the driver information display
indicates that regeneration is required or
possible, see page 134.
Parked regeneration takes about 45 to
120 min to completely remove the
accumulated soot and/or sulphur
particles.
The bus may not be driven during parked
regeneration.
NOTE
When regeneration required message
appears on the display, it is important that
a parked regeneration is performed as
soon as possible.
Service regeneration
A message in the driver information
display indicates that regeneration is
required. Stop the vehicle in a safe
location and contact the workshop since
the soot level is critical.
Service regeneration is a more advanced
process and can only be performed by a
service technician using the Volvo
diagnostic tool and can take about 45 to
120 min to perform.
