EMC Installation Guidelines
These guidelines cover the basic points to be considered when installing SINAMICS Perfect
Harmony™ GH180 motor drives with minimum Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) impact on
the surrounding environment. A drive that limits RFI to within specified levels has achieved
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). There are four key areas that need to be addressed to
achieve EMC:
• Earthing
• Screening
• Filtering
• Wiring

Earthing
Siemens recommends the drive be bonded to earth (ground) at only one point using the shortest
length conductor possible. This conductor must be properly sized per applicable local
guidelines / regulations / laws.
All sections of the drive are internally bonded by green / yellow or black with green and yellow
tape jacketed wire. In the event of a medium voltage ground fault within the drive, the peak fault
current and duration are much greater in the drive input section versus the drive output section.
Therefore, Siemens recommends the drive be bonded to earth (ground) in the medium, voltage
input section to minimize the exposure of the drive internal bonds to high fault current.
Alternatively, the drive can be solidly bonded to earth (ground) at multiple points if an earth
(grounding) grid is located directly beneath the drive.
Neither the SINAMICS Perfect Harmony™ GH180 transformer primary winding neutral point nor
the drive medium voltage output neutral point shall be bonded to earth (ground).
The motor frame should be bonded to earth (ground) using the shortest cable length. A motor
shaft earthing (grounding) brush installed on the shaft drive end (DE) is recommended when
