TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Introduction Introduction This document contains instructions for replacing parts that may wear during instrument oper- ation and for calibrating the instrument. Replacing broken or contaminated parts is not part of a Scheduled Maintenance. Repairs should be made before proceeding with the Scheduled Maintenance and should be charged separately from the Scheduled Maintenance.
Initial Evaluation TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Initial Evaluation Checking for Shipping Damage If the instrument was shipped to the factory for maintenance, visually inspect the instrument, look for damaged panels, and cracked or broken indicators, display, or connectors. If the instrument appears to have been damaged, remove the cover and check for interior component damage.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Initial Evaluation Checking Components Select from the TriStar main menu. Unit [n] > Unit Configuration Enter N2 beside the valve it is connected to. Ensure that the gas selected here matches the gas connected to the instrument.

Initial Evaluation TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions If the schematic is not selected, select Unit [n] > Show Instrument Schematic. If manual control is not enabled, select Unit [n] > Enable Manual Control Install empty sample tubes on the three sample ports.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Maintenance (Power Disconnected) Maintenance (Power Disconnected) Exit the TriStar application software. Place the Power On/Off switch on the rear panel of the instrument in the Off (O ) position. Disconnect the power cord from the instrument.
Maintenance (Power Disconnected) TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Wait approximately 10 minutes (allowing the Dewar to warm), then rinse the Dewar with warm (not hot) water to melt any remaining ice accumulation; dry thoroughly. For glass Dewars only: Do not rinse an iced Dewar with hot water; this could cause the Dewar to implode.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Maintenance (Power Disconnected) Changing the Vacuum Pump Oil These instructions apply to oil-based vacuum pumps only. Always drain the vacuum pump while the pump is warm and disconnected from the power source. Unplug the vacuum pump from the power source.

Maintenance (Power Disconnected) TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions d. Replace the drain plug. Remove the plug from the oil-fill port. Oil-fill port Slowly add oil to the port until the level is midway between the indicator lines in the oil- level window.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Maintenance (Power Disconnected) Check the alumina in the oil vapor trap. If most of the pellets are no longer white, replace the alumina in the oil vapor trap (see instructions below) before reattaching the vacuum pump.
Page 14
Maintenance (Power Disconnected) TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Prepare fresh alumina as follows: a. Pour approximately 180 grams of fresh alumina into a glass or metal container (approximately 250 mL if a graduated beaker is used). Place the container in the preheated oven.
Page 15
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Maintenance (Power Disconnected) 10. Be sure the trap body is dry and the alumina is lukewarm; pour the alumina pellets into the trap until they are just below the threads of the trap body.
Page 16
Maintenance (Power Disconnected) TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions 14. Place the trap on the centering ring. 15. Open the clamp and place it around the flange of the intake port and the flange of the trap. Swing the clamp fastening screw toward the intake port until it fits into the slot in the other half of the clamp.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Maintenance (Power Disconnected) Clamp wing nut 17. Plug the pump power cord into the power source. 18. Allow the pump to run a few hours (overnight if possible) to eliminate air and moisture from the fresh oil and to produce efficient vacuum operations.
Maintenance (Power Connected) TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Maintenance (Power Connected) Reapplying Power Connect the power cord and place the Power On/Off switch in the On ( | ) position. Lubricating the Elevator Screw Unscrew, then remove the Po tube from the front panel of the analyzer.

Maintenance (Power Connected) TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Apply a light coat of grease (teflon-based) to the elevator screw. There are two buttons on the elevator PCB that allow you to move the elevator mechanism up and down. One is shown in the graphic below.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Calibration Calibration You can review calibration data by selecting from the main Unit [n] > Unit Configuration menu. Calibration files are loaded during installation of the software. Zeroing the Pressure Transducers Select from the main menu.
Calibration TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Calibrating the Pressure Scale Make sure the Instrument Schematic is displayed and manual mode is enabled. Attach nitrogen at 10 to 15 psig to the gas inlet port for Valve 9. Make sure valve 6 is closed for the next step. The transducers can be damaged if this valve is open.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Calibration Remove the plug or sample tube from port 1 so that all transducers are at atmospheric pressure. Use a pressure gauge to determine atmospheric pressure. Enter the pressure from the pressure gauge in the Actual manifold pressure field.
Calibration TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Calibrating the 10-mmHg Pressure Transducer (10-mmHg units onl To perform this calibration, you must be able to connect an external reference gauge to Sample Port 1. Connect an external pressure gauge to sample port 1.
TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Calibration 10-mmHg transducer 10. Click to close the dialog. 11. A confirmation message is displayed. Click Calibrating the Servo Valve Make sure the pressure transducer has been zeroed before performing this procedure. On the manual control screen, close valves 1, 2, and 3.
Calibration TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Click Start A message is displayed when calibration is complete. Click Calibrating the Temperature Remove the four retaining screws from the top of the analyzer. Retaining screws Remove the top panel from the analyzer.

TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Calibration Remove the cover. Select from the main menu. Unit [n] > Calibration > Temperature Enter the temperature obtained using the calibration device, then click Remove the temperature probe from the analyzer. 10. Reattach the top panel using the four screws removed in step 1. Insert each of the screws and turn slightly.
Calibration TriStar II 3020 Scheduled Maintenance Instructions Calibrating the Volume Remove the sample port nuts from ports 1 and 2. Make sure the ferrules and O-rings are also removed. Place the ferrules and O-rings on the stems of the calibration volume chamber.
