If the card is swiped through the POS device and the POS device prompts that the card
must be inserted into the chip reader, do so immediately. If the POS device prompts you
to insert the card into the chip reader but there is no chip on the card, do not proceed with
the transaction. This could be a cloned card, and if you continue with the transaction, you
might be exposed to chargebacks
A four-digit number will always be pre-printed on the card; it must match the first four
digits of the embossed account number

AUTHORISATIONS

Obtain an authorisation number for all transactions when prompted to do so
An authorisation code is only to confirm that the requested amount is available; it does not
serve as guarantee against any fraudulent transactions
Authorisations must be obtained for all manual transactions processed using an imprinter
booklet (no electronic intervention)
All merchants must phone the Standard Bank Authorisations department and obtain an
authorisation code when the POS device prompts them to do so and when a manual sale is
processed
Only Standard Bank Authorisations can issue an authorisation code
Incorrect or invalid authorisation codes could result in a merchant's account being debited
SUPERVISOR PIN
This PIN number is given to the merchant to restrict access to manual card entry, refunds,
banking and duplicate sales on the same card
The supervisor PIN is not an authorisation code and cannot be used as such
Remember that it's important to always update and/or renew the supervisor PIN for
security reasons, and only share the PIN with trusted and/or senior staff members

CARDHOLDER SIGNATURE

The cardholder must sign the transaction in front of the merchant
The signature on the voucher must be compared with the signature on the back of the
card before releasing the goods
If you're for any reason suspicious of the card or the transaction, contact the Authorisation
Centre immediately and request a code 10 authorisation. If possible, state why you're suspicious
and await instructions. If you're instructed to retain the card, be as reasonable and peaceful as
possible to comply with the instruction.
