Managing Through the Console Port

This section describes how to connect and set up
equipment to communicate with the switch through
its console port (out-of-band management).
The switch automatically detects the baud rate of the
management station and adjusts its own baud rate
to match, providing that the baud rate of the
management station is no more than 19200. You
need to use a null modem cable for connection to the
switch's console port. This is available from your
supplier. There are a variety of null modem cables that
you can use. For an example of one of these, refer to
"Examples of Null Modem Cables You Can Use"
page A-3.
Connection to the console port may be direct or
through modems, giving the options of local or
remote configuration, as shown in
the documentation that accompanies your modem,
for information on connecting and using it in your
management setup.

For local management, connect one end of the null
modem cable to the console port on the switch, and
the other to the serial (RS232) port on your
management station.
For the communication to work, you must have a SLIP
(Serial Line IP) driver installed on your management
station. We have supplied a serial web utility on the
disk that accompanies your switch, which is a SLIP
driver for use with Windows '95. For information on
how to install and use it, refer to
