30.1
Backing up, verifying, and restoring the configuration
database
The 2902 MainStreet system stores its configuration database in NVM on the
Control card. You can back up, verify a backup, and restore the database using the
NMTI, Craft Interface Node Manager or a computer running the 5620 NM software.
However, you cannot restore the database from a 5620 NM connected to the
2902 MainStreet system through a modem.
If you are using a VT100 terminal to run the node management session for a backup,
verify or restore operation, both 2902 MainStreet system serial ports are used: one
for the terminal and one for a data storage device, such as a PC or other EIA/TIA-232
compatible device. The device stores the backup files.
Backing up the database
The backup option creates a backup copy of the configuration database on an
external device. When the backup commands are issued from a terminal running the
NMTI session, the backup file is saved to a PC. When the backup commands are
issued from a 5620 NM, the backup file is saved to the computer running the network
management program.
During a backup, calls in progress continue and new calls can be initiated.
Before backing up the database, ensure that the backup device is ready to receive the
data transfer. For example, a PC must be running software that captures incoming
serial data to be stored in an ASCII file. The device must be connected to a properly
configured 2902 MainStreet system serial port.
For baud rates of 2400, 4800 and 9600 b/s, the flow control must be set.
The backup procedure can last several minutes, depending on the selected baud rate
and the complexity of the configuration database. It is recommended that you make
a copy of the backup file in case the file becomes corrupted.
If the current database has been corrupted and repaired (due to an NVM problem), it
cannot be used as a backup. At the end of the backup procedure, the display shows
"The NVM is corrupted and cannot be backed up". The fault in the NVM does not
necessarily interfere with the operation of the 2902 MainStreet system.
Verifying a backup file
The backup file should be verified with the current database on the 2902 MainStreet
system. The file verification can be performed whenever the external device holding
the backup file is accessible to the system.
During a verify, calls in progress continue and new calls can be initiated.
The same baud rate must be used for both the backup and verify procedures. For baud
rates of 2400, 4800 and 9600 b/s, the flow control must be set.
When the verification procedure is complete, the 2902 MainStreet system displays
the message "Database successfully verified" if the two databases are identical. If
they are not identical, an error message is displayed.
