Cuff leak procedure

The cuff leak procedure was identified as a technique that may be employed with
HFOV to assist with clearing tracheal dead space of CO
and assist with maintaining an
2
adequate pH. Decreasing cuff pressure allows gas (PaCO
) to escape around the
2
ET tube and to be excreted through the mouth. In some cases PaCO
can drop by
2
30 to 40 mmHg (or more). However, it should be noted that if there is an active air
leak from a chest tube, the effect of a cuff leak may be minimal or non-existent.
