3.1.9.9. Routing Interfaces and Addressing

3.1.9.9.1. Loopback Interfaces

The loopback interface is a Layer 3 interface, not dependent on the physical
interface. Therefore, the loopback interface is considered to be up all the time. The
IP address configured as the loopback interface is typically used as the target IP
address for administrative or remote connections to the router.

3.1.9.9.2. VLAN and Port-based Routing

The port-based routing interface is created by enabling the routing of the physical
port. This physical port is the only member of the routing interface. The status of
the routing interface depends on whether the physical port is up or down. Port -
based routing interfaces are typically used for point-to-point connections between
two routers.
The VLAN ID is assigned internally for each port-based routing interface. This VLAN
ID cannot be assigned to other interfaces. Which VLAN ID is assigned to the
port-based routing interface can be set by option setting. For port-based routing
interfaces, VLAN IDs are not reserved. If the port-based routing interface is not
created, all VLAN IDs can be used for other usage.
The VLAN routing interface is created by enabling routing on the VLAN. The VLAN
routing interface includes all the physical ports that are members of the VLAN. A
routing interface is considered as up when one or more member interfaces are up.
VLAN interfaces can include LAG (or "port channel") in members. Routing cannot be
directly enabled in LAG. A new slot/port ID is created for each VLAN routing
interface. The port ID of each VLAN interface can be specified as part of the
configuration. VLAN routing interfaces are typically used for LAN connections with
multiple hosts.
A VLAN divides a physical network (broadcast domain) into logical networks. When
forwarding across VLAN boundaries, a layer 3 device like a router is required. When
configuring the VLAN routing interface, the active switch operates as a Layer 3
device.
The VLAN routing interface allows transmission between VLANs while including
broadcast communication within the VLAN boundary. With the configuration of the
VLAN routing interface, internal VLAN routing is enabled.
