SNMP Community Strings

CAUTION
In SNMP v1/v2c, the SNMP Community String is sent unencrypted in the
SNMP packets. Caution must be taken by the network administrator to ensure
that SNMP packets travel only over a secure and private network if security is a
concern.
The CDD-56xA/L uses Community Strings as a password scheme that provides authentication before
gaining access to the demodulator agent's MIBs. They are used to authenticate users and determine access
privileges to the SNMP agent.
For correct SNMP operation, the CDD-56xA/L MIB files must be used with the applicable version of the
demodulator M&C. See the CDD-562AL/564A/564AL FW Release Notes for information on the
required FW/SW compatibility.
The maximum number of characters for community strings shall not exceed 20. All printable ASCII
characters, except '\' and '~' are allowed. No trailing spaces are permitted for community strings.
Any changes made to the IP Parameters are lost if the demodulator is reset or loses power, unless the
changes were first saved to permanent storage. The IP Parameters can be saved by a SET of the
cdd564SaveParamToFlash OID within the MIB.
Type the SNMP Community String into the user-supplied MIB Browser or Network Node Management
software.
The user defines three Community Strings for SNMP access:
Read Community
Write Community
Trap Community

SNMP Traps

The CDD-56xA/L supports both SNMPv1 traps and SNMPv2 notifications. The demodulator can send
out SNMP traps when certain events occur in the demodulator.
Use the cdd564aSNMPTrapVersion OID to select which style of traps the demodulator sends. These styles
include unit faults, Rx faults and LNB faults. A trap is sent when a fault occurs and when it is cleared.
The CDD-56xA/L supports these MIB-II v1traps/v2 notifications:
Cold Start
Link Up
Authentication Failure

default = private
