Now let's see what happens if we use a long, soft spring and a short, stiff spring. We will use a
100 lb/
rate spring with a free length of 10 inches.

the 100 lb/ in, 10 inch spring will react the same with 300 pounds of preload. The 300 lb/in sPrin9
will not have any preload as its installed length is the same as the free length.
So if we apply 150 pounds of force, the Ist spring will not move, while the 2nd spring will compress
0.5 inches (see following illustration).
