CAUTION:
Avoid contact with hot components inside the computer. During operation, some components
become hot enough to burn the skin. Before you open the computer cover, turn off the computer,
disconnect power, and wait approximately 10 minutes for the components to cool.
Notes:
• Ensure that you install the correct type of microprocessor your computer supports. When two
microprocessors are installed, they must be identical.
• Your microprocessor, socket, and socket cover might look slightly different from the illustrations in this
topic.
• Do not touch the pins on the microprocessor socket or the gold contacts on the microprocessor.

Depending on your computer model, your computer might be installed with one or two microprocessors.
To remove or install a microprocessor, do the following:
1. Prepare your computer. See "Preparing your computer and removing the computer cover" on page 103.
2. Remove the direct cooling air baffle. See "Direct cooling air baffle" on page 107.
3. Lay the computer on its side for easier access to the heat-sink-and-fan assembly.
4. Locate the correct microprocessor socket on the system board. See "Parts on the system board" on
page 38.
5. To remove a microprocessor, do the following:
a. Remove the heat-sink-and-fan assembly from the system board. Then, remove the microprocessor
retainer with the microprocessor from the heat-sink-and-fan assembly. See "Heat-sink-and-fan
assembly" on page 200.
