Introduction

The HP StorageWorks Pass-Through Mechanism (PTM) enables the transfer of tape cartridges
between HP StorageWorks MSL6000 Series tape libraries. A single PTM system can be used to
create a multi-unit tape library configuration by connecting:
Up to eight two-drive libraries
Up to four four-drive libraries
A combination of two- and four-drive libraries equivalent to a 40U height

All MSL Series libraries in a multi-unit library configuration must use the same drive types.
Check with your application software vendor to manage partitioning by tape technology if you
want to mix drive types in a multi-unit library configuration.
Mixed media is not supported on libraries with firmware levels of 4.04 or earlier.
The PTM installation procedure consists of the following steps:

Preparing for the PTM installation

Installing the PTM
Cabling the PTM
Configuring the PTM
NOTE:
An MSL Series PTM is not compatible with either a TL series or an SSL series PTM.
Preparing for the PTM Installation
Before beginning the installation procedure:

Using the packing slip, verify the components that came with the PTM Upgrade Kit.

Make sure that you have the required tools (see
