1. First you must upgrade from R1 firmware level to the R2 firmware level, which
is a "stepping stone" to R3 firmware. This means upgrading the ESM from R1
level firmware (953x) to R2 level firmware (9554), and upgrading the DS4000
storage subsystem controller firmware from 05.41.1x.xx to controller firmware
version, 05.41.5x.xx.
2. Then you must upgrade the ESM from the R2 "stepping stone" to the latest R3
ESM and controller firmware. This means upgrading the ESM from R2 level
firmware (9554) to R3 level firmware (956x), and upgrading the controller
firmware from version 05.41.5x.xx to version 6.12.1x.xx.
Complete the following procedures to upgrade to EXP100 R2 full high-availability
support ("stepping stone" to R3 firmware):

Before you begin the upgrade, ensure that the firmware levels listed in Table 19 are
currently installed.

Install the firmware and NVSRAM using the steps that are described in
"Downloading the controller firmware and NVSRAM" on page 112.
To find out how to check your current firmware levels, see "Determining firmware
levels" on page 11.
Important:
v You cannot use the upgrade procedures in this section to upgrade a DS4000
from Fibre Channel controller firmware (version 05.40.xx.xx or earlier) to SATA
controller firmware (version 05.41.xx.xx). You must already have SATA firmware
installed before you attempt the upgrade.
v After you upgrade your firmware to support EXP100 R2 full high-availability, you
cannot downgrade the firmware back to EXP100 R1 limited high-availability.
