Checking the propeller shaft

1. Check the propeller shaft. Replace if
damaged or worn.
2. Measure the propeller shaft runout.
Propeller shaft runout:
0.02 mm (0.0008 in)

Checking the propeller shaft housing

See "Checking the propeller shaft housing"
(8-16).

Checking the forward gear

1. Check the teeth and dogs of the forward
gear. Replace if cracked or worn.

housing assembly and forward gear
• Use heat-resistant gloves. Otherwise,
burns could result.
• To prevent fires, remove any flammable
substances, such as gasoline and oil,
around the working area.
• Keep good ventilation while working.
1. Install the needle bearing and oil seals.
See steps 1 and 2 in "Assembling the
propeller shaft housing assembly" (8-17).
2. Install the original propeller shaft shims
"1" and thrust bearing "2".
3. Install the propeller shaft "1" and taper
roller bearing inner race "2".
4. Heat the area of the propeller shaft hous-
ing where the taper roller bearing outer
race "1" is to be installed using a gas
torch, and then install the taper roller
bearing outer race "1".
