Switching Device Control

4–334
The 869 relay can control and monitor two types of motor switching devices: breakers and
contactors. When selecting a switching device for the motor application, the user has to
make sure that the device is rated to interrupt the maximum current expected while the
motor is running. The selection made on the 869 setpoint menu has to match the actual
switching device type used to control the motor. The selection affects execution of the start
and stop commands, and monitoring of the device state targets and events.
The switching device can be controlled in different modes of operation using different
commands as described below:
Local – The motor is controlled (i.e. stop/start) from the 869 front panel pushbuttons.
Remote – The motor is controlled (i.e. stop/start) from any assigned and asserted FlexLogic
operand; contact input, virtual input, virtual output, remote input, or via communication.
The Switching Device Control menu is designed to open and close the switching device
(stop/start the motor) either remotely (LOCAL MODE setpoint set to "Off", or the selected
LOCAL MODE operand de-asserted), or locally (the selected LOCAL MODE setpoint set to
"On" or the selected LOCAL MODE operand asserted). While in local mode, the LED "LOCAL
MODE" is lit, and the Remote Start and Remote Stop setpoints are not active.
By default, the switching device control mode is set to Remote (LOCAL MODE set to Off). In
this mode, the Remote Start and Remote Stop setpoints are active.

input de-asserted).
LOCAL STOP
