5.4.1
Updating the Server Blade Firmware
(BIOS and BMC)
You can update the server blade's BIOS as well as the server blade's BMC
firmware.
I
BMC is the abbreviation for baseboard management controller. The BMC
on the server blade collects management information and forwards it to
the management blade.
There are two ways to update the server blade BIOS and BMC firmware:
– using an USB floppy disk drive (see 5.4.1.1)
– using an TFTP (see 5.4.1.2)
5.4.1.1

Using an USB Floppy Disk Drive

Proceed as follows:
Ê Download the file BX300_BIOS_<version>_<processor-type>.EXE
(BIOS and BMC update FD) and execute it to create a bootable floppy disk.
Ê Connect the breakout cable (Y-cable) to the front panel of the desired server
blade. Connect the USB floppy disk drive to the other end of the breakout
cable.
Ê Turn on or reboot the server blade. The firmware updates (BIOS and BMC)
are being performed automatically.
I
You may have to change the sequence of boot devices in the BIOS to
enable booting from floppy disk. Further information can be found in
the BIOS Setup Description and the ServerStart User Guide. Both
manuals are contained on your ServerBooks CD.
