  • Why is my Brother FAX-2840 not sending or receiving faxes?

    If your Brother FAX-2840 is not sending or receiving faxes, check the following:

    • FAX cannot be sent:

      • Check that the telephone cord is securely inserted into the socket.
      • If the modem PCB flat cable connection is faulty, reconnect the modem PCB flat cable.
      • If the panel PCB harness connection is faulty, reconnect the panel PCB harness.
      • If the rubber key connection is faulty, replace the rubber key.
      • If the modem PCB is faulty, replace the modem PCB ASSY.
      • If the panel PCB is faulty, replace the panel PCB ASSY.
      • If the main PCB is faulty, replace the main PCB ASSY.

    • FAX cannot be received:

      • Check that the telephone cord is securely inserted into the socket.
      • Check that the reception mode setting is correct.
      • Check that the paper is loaded into the paper tray correctly.
      • If the modem PCB flat cable connection is faulty, reconnect the modem PCB flat cable.
      • If the modem PCB is faulty, replace the modem PCB ASSY.
      • If the main PCB is faulty, replace the main PCB ASSY.

  • What should I do if my Brother FAX-2840 is not turning on?

    If your Brother FAX-2840 is not turning on or the LCD indication does not appear, follow these steps:

    1. AC cord failure: Replace the AC cord.
    2. Connection failure of the panel PCB harness: Reconnect the panel PCB harness.
    3. Connection failure of the LCD harness: Reconnect the LCD harness.
    4. LCD failure: Replace the LCD.

  • How do I perform a drum reset on the Brother FAX-2840?

    To reset the drum counter, follow the procedure described in "2.2 Parts Life Reset Function (Drum)" in Chapter
    5. This function is used to reset the relevant part counter when the user replaces a periodical replacement part with the correct procedure, and also used to forcibly reset the relevant part counter when an error cannot be reset because the user did not replace a consumable part with the correct procedure.

    To perform a drum reset:

    1. Press the [3] and [9] buttons at the same time while the machine is in the ready state.
    2. "Reset Menu Drum" appears on the LCD. Press the [OK] button.
    3. "Drum 1.Reset 2.Exit" appears on the LCD. Press the [1] or [2] button.
    4. When the [1] button is pressed, the counter is cleared.

  • How do I reset the toner on my Brother FAX-2840?

    You can manually reset the developer roller counter, which is the same operation as when the toner cartridge is replaced with a new one. This function is used to reset errors when the toner life display cannot be cleared because the new toner is not recognized by the machine.

    To reset the toner counter:

    1. Open the front cover.
    2. Press the [Clear] button. "Replace Drum?
    3. Yes
    4. No" appears on the LCD.
    5. Reset the counter based on the toner type:
      • For Starter toner: Press the [*], [1] and [0] buttons in this order.
      • For Standard toner: Press the [*], [1] and [1] buttons in this order.
      • For High capacity toner: Press the [*], [1] and [2] buttons in this order.
      • If the toner type is unclear: Press the [*], [0] and [0] buttons in this order (this will treat it as the same type as previously set). The entered numbers and "Accepted" will appear on the LCD for two seconds.
    6. After two seconds, "Cover is open" appears on the LCD.
    7. Close the front cover.

  • Why are my prints faded or unclear from the Brother FAX-2840?

    If your prints are faded or unclear, it may be due to the following reasons and solutions:

    • Environmental conditions: High temperature and high humidity or low temperature and low humidity conditions can cause this problem. Check the machine's environment and adjust if necessary.
    • Toner save mode: If the whole page is light, toner save mode may be ON. Turn OFF the toner save mode.
    • Density adjustment: Adjust the density by the Density Adjustment setting.
    • Drum unit: Replace the drum unit with a new one.
    • Toner cartridge: Replace the toner cartridge with a new one. Replacing a used toner cartridge with a relatively new used one can cause this problem.
    • Condensation: Check that condensation has not formed in the machine or the installation location is appropriate.
    • Dirty electrodes: If the electrodes of the drum unit and those of the machine are dirty, clean them. Turn OFF the power switch, unplug the power cord, wait a few minutes, then wipe the electrodes with a dry, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to change the shapes of the electrodes.
    • Developing bias failure: Reset the counter for the developer roller.
    • High voltage power supply PCB failure: Replace the high voltage power supply PCB ASSY.
    • Laser unit failure: Replace the laser unit.
    • Main PCB failure: Replace the main PCB ASSY.

  • Why is my Brother FAX-2840 printing blank pages?

    If your Brother FAX-2840 is printing completely blank pages, consider the following:

    • Environmental conditions: High temperature and high humidity or low temperature and low humidity conditions can cause this problem. Check the machine's environment and adjust if necessary.
    • Corona wire: Clean the corona wire of the drum unit.
    • Drum unit: Replace the drum unit with a new one.
    • Toner cartridge: Replace the toner cartridge with a new one.
    • Elastic band: Remove the elastic band from the drum unit.
    • Dirty electrodes: If the electrodes of the drum unit and those of the machine are dirty, clean them. (Refer to Fig. 2-10 and Fig. 2-11 for location).
    • Connection failure of the scanner harness of the laser unit: Reconnect the scanner harness of the laser unit.

    • Main PCB failure: Replace the main PCB ASSY.

  • What error codes might I see on the Brother FAX-2840 display and what do they mean?

    The Brother FAX-2840 has a self-diagnosis function that displays error messages and codes on the LCD if an error or malfunction occurs. Here are some examples of error codes and their meanings:

    • 0B, 0E, 0F, 10-18, 1A-1D, 1F-23, 25-35, 37-3A, 3C-43, 45-4F, 51-55, 57, 64-66, 68-69, 6E, 70, 73-74, 7B-7C, 7E, 81-82, 85-87, 89, 9D-9E, A0, A9-AC, AE-AF, B3-B6, BA, BC, BE-BF, C1-C6, C9-CF, D2-DC, DF, E3-E4, E7-EB, ED-EE, F1-F8, FA-FF: These are unidentified errors that do not usually occur in normal use. They may be caused by noise around the installation site, power supply voltage fluctuation, or software failures. The general remedy is to turn OFF the power switch and turn it ON again after a while. If the problem persists, the main PCB ASSY may need to be replaced.
    • 19 (Drum reached end of life): The drum reached the end of its life while the WSW 78 selector 1 was set to ON. You should replace the drum unit and reset the drum counter.
    • 24 (Internal temperature thermistor error): An error occurred in the internal temperature thermistor. This could be due to a connection failure of the harness or a faulty thermistor. Reconnect or replace the thermistor, or replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • 36 (High voltage power supply PCB error): An error occurred in the high voltage power supply PCB in the ready state. Check the harness connection or replace the high voltage power supply PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 3B (DRAM access error): An error occurred during access to the DRAM in the main PCB. Replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • 44 (New toner sensor error): The new toner sensor did not detect the toner cartridge correctly. Ensure the toner cartridge is installed, reconnect the sensor harness, or replace the new toner sensor PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 50 (Drum unit reached end of life): The number of rotations of the drum unit has reached its life limit (printing does not stop). Prepare a new drum unit.
    • 56 (Fuser unit cover open): The eject sensor detected that the fuser unit cover was open. Close the fuser unit cover. If the problem persists, check the paper eject actuator position, or replace the eject sensor PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 58 (Fuser error on power ON/sleep exit): Any of errors 6A to 6D, 6F, 76 or 78 occurred when the power was turned ON or the machine goes back to the ready state from sleep mode. Turn OFF the power switch, wait, then turn ON again. If it reoccurs, follow the remedy for the specific fuser error code.
    • 59 (Self-diagnostic/fuser error): Rechecking the error after the power switch was turned OFF and then ON again because an error was detected by the center thermistor of the fuser unit. This will automatically restart within 15 minutes. Check connections of fuser unit harnesses, replace fuser unit, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 63 (Toner cartridge reached upper limit): The number of rotations of the developer roller reached the upper limit when Stop Mode is set for the toner cartridge. Replace the toner cartridge or press Menu, 1, 7 to clear Stop Mode and shift to Continue Mode.
    • 67 (Toner low): The number of rotations of the developer roller will reach the upper limit when Stop Mode is set for the toner cartridge. Prepare a new toner cartridge.
    • 6A, 6B (Fuser unit not reaching temp): The center thermistor of the fuser unit does not reach the specified temperature within the specified time. Check fuser unit harness, replace fuser unit, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 6C (Fuser unit over temp): The center thermistor of the fuser unit detected a temperature higher than the specified value. Check fuser unit harness, replace fuser unit, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 6D (Fuser unit temp fall): After the heat unit was heated normally, the center thermistor of the fuser unit detected a temperature lower than the specified value. Check fuser unit harness, replace fuser unit, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 6F (Fuser unit temp error): The center thermistor or the side thermistor of the fuser unit detected a temperature error. Check fuser unit harness, replace fuser unit, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 71 (Polygon motor error): An error was detected in the synchronized signal of the polygon motor for the laser unit. Replace the laser unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • 72 (Beam sensor error): Cannot detect the signal from the beam sensor for the laser unit. Condensation may have occurred; turn OFF the power, leave the machine for an hour in a well-ventilated place, then turn ON. If the problem persists, enter the correction value of the laser unit, reconnect the laser unit flat cable, or replace the main PCB ASSY or laser unit.
    • 75 (Internal temperature thermistor over temp): The internal temperature thermistor detected a temperature higher than the specified value. Leave the machine on for a while to cool down. If the problem persists, replace the internal temperature thermistor or main PCB ASSY.
    • 76 (Fuser unit temp rise): The center thermistor of the fuser unit detected a temperature rise greater than the specified value within the specified time. Check fuser unit harness, replace fuser unit, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 78 (Fuser unit temp fall): The center thermistor of the fuser unit detected a temperature fall greater than the specified value within the specified time. Check fuser unit harness, replace fuser unit, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 7A (Main motor error): Cannot detect the synchronized signal of the main motor, or the speed of the main motor does not stabilize within the specified time. Reconnect the main motor flat cable, or replace the main motor, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 7D (Dirty corona wire): Detected discharge that may be attributable to dirty corona wire on the drum unit. Clean the corona wire of the drum unit, or replace the high voltage power supply PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 7F (Paper size mismatch - fax): The paper size set on the machine is smaller than the specified fax size. Reset the paper size setting in the menu, or replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • 80 (Paper size mismatch - paper tray): The registration front sensor detected that the paper set in the paper tray was smaller than the specified size. Set A4 size paper. If the problem persists, replace the regist frame ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 83 (Drum stop): Detected discharge when the number of rotations of the drum has exceeded twice the life limit. Replace the drum unit and reset the drum counter, or replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • 84 (Jam Rear): The eject sensor remains ON (paper pass detected) for more than the specified time even after the registration rear sensor detected the end of paper pass. Check for jammed paper, remove foreign objects, reattach paper eject actuator, reattach eject pinch roller, or replace eject sensor PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 88 (Jam Inside): The eject sensor does not detect paper pass after the registration rear sensor detected the end of paper pass. Check for jammed paper and remove it. Reconnect eject sensor PCB ASSY harness, correct paper eject actuator position, or replace eject sensor PCB ASSY, fuser unit gear, or main PCB ASSY.
    • 8A (Jam Tray): The registration front sensor does not detect paper pass within the specified time. Check for jammed paper, adjust paper guide, ensure correct paper thickness (60 to 105 g/m²), and ensure not too much paper is in the tray. Reattach registration front actuator, reconnect registration front/rear sensor PCB ASSY harness, or replace regist frame ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 8D (Cover is Open): When the power switch was turned ON, the eject sensor detected paper pass or detected that the fuser unit cover was open. Close the fuser unit cover and remove any jammed paper around the back cover. Correct paper eject actuator position, or replace eject sensor PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 9A (Manual Feed - No Paper): The registration front sensor detected that there was no paper set in the manual feed slot when feeding from the manual feed slot was set. Load paper into the manual feed slot. Reconnect registration front/rear sensor PCB ASSY harness, or replace main PCB ASSY or regist frame ASSY.
    • 9B (Toner Ended): The number of rotations of the developer roller reached the upper limit when Continue Mode is set for the toner cartridge. Replace the toner cartridge.
    • 9C (Replace Toner): The number of rotations of the developer roller will reach the upper limit soon when Continue Mode is set for the toner cartridge. Replace the toner cartridge. Correct new toner actuator position, reconnect new toner sensor harness, or replace new toner sensor PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • 9F (Paper out - fax/report): The registration front sensor detected that the paper has run out when faxing or printing a list or report. Set paper in the paper tray. Correct registration front actuator position, reconnect registration front/rear sensor PCB ASSY harness, or replace regist frame ASSY, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • A1 (Front Cover Open): The front cover sensor detected that the front cover was open. Close the front cover correctly. Reconnect high voltage power supply PCB ASSY harness, or replace front cover ASSY, high voltage power supply PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • A2 (Document Jam - scanning length): The document scanning position sensor detected that the document length was 90 cm or more while scanning the document. Check that the document or foreign object is not jammed in the ADF. Correct document scanning position actuator position, or replace panel PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • A3 (Document Jam - leading edge): The document scanning position sensor does not detect the leading edge of the document although the document has been fed for the specified distance. Check that the document is not jammed in the ADF. Correct document scanning position actuator position, reconnect document scanning position sensor harness, or replace panel PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • A4 (Control Panel Cover Open): The control panel cover sensor detected that the control panel cover was open. Close the control panel cover. Reattach control panel cover sensor, reconnect control panel cover sensor harness, or replace control panel cover sensor, control panel cover, or main PCB ASSY.
    • A5, A6 (CIS white/black compensation data out of range): When scanning a fax, white or black compensation data for the CIS was not within the correct range. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. Execute "Function code 55" for white level data acquisition, or replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • A7, A8 (Color parameter mismatch): The color parameter in the ROM does not match the CIS. Execute "Function code 55" for white level data acquisition, or replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • AD (Insufficient scanned data pixels): Image processing cannot be completed correctly because the number of pixels required for image processing is insufficient in the scanned data. Remove the original document. Replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • B0 (CIS harness not inserted): Detected that the CIS harness was not inserted correctly. Reconnect the CIS unit harness, or replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • B1 (Dark level offset data error): Dark level offset data adjustment error for scanning. This error is indicated on the LCD in maintenance mode.
    • B2 (Gain control data error): Gain control data adjustment error for scanning. Replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • B7 (Voltage value above upper limit - scanning): The voltage value was above the upper limit during scanning.
    • B8 (Voltage value below lower limit - scanning): The voltage value was below the lower limit during scanning.
    • B9 (White level not increasing): The white level does not increase during scanning although the light intensity was increased. Replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • BB (White level not within standard): A white level not within the standard was scanned when function code 55 was executed. Clean the pressure bar, or replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • BD (Black level not within standard): A black level not within the standard was scanned when function code 55 was executed. Replace the CIS unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • C0 (New toner sensor not detected): The new toner sensor could not detect the new toner cartridge correctly. Install a new toner cartridge. Reattach the new toner actuator, reconnect the new toner sensor harness, or replace the new toner sensor PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • C7 (Insufficient memory for PC print): There is insufficient memory to expand PC-print data. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • C8 (Memory size exceeded for Secure Print): The memory size allotted for Secure Print was exceeded when saving Secure Print data. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • D1 (Modem initialization error): An error occurred while initializing the modem. Turn OFF and ON the power. If the problem persists, replace the modem PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY.
    • DD (Fuser unit error): Fuser unit error (except specific codes). Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, check fuser unit harnesses, eject sensor PCB harness, or replace eject sensor PCB ASSY, low voltage power supply PCB ASSY, main PCB ASSY, or fuser unit.
    • DE (Fuser unit thermistor temp mismatch): When the center thermistor of the fuser unit is higher than the idle temperature, the side thermistor detected a temperature lower than the specified temperature. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, check fuser unit thermistor harness, or replace fuser unit, eject sensor PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • E0 (ROM check sum error): An error occurred in the ROM check sum. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. Reinstall the latest firmware, or replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • E1 (Software bug): Software bug. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • E2 (Fuser unit thermistor temp mismatch): When the center thermistor of the fuser unit is higher than the idle temperature, the side thermistor detected a temperature higher than the specified temperature. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, check fuser unit thermistor harness, or replace fuser unit or main PCB ASSY.
    • E6 (EEPROM write error): Write error in the EEPROM of the main PCB. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • EC (Main fan failure): Detected a main fan failure. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. If the problem persists, check main fan harness, high voltage power supply PCB harness, or replace main fan, high voltage power supply PCB ASSY, or main PCB ASSY.
    • EF (Unstable power supply): Unstable power supply was detected. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. Reset the irregular power supply detection counter, or replace the low voltage power supply PCB ASSY or main PCB ASSY. Also, review the installation environment for power supply issues.
    • F0 (Flash memory malfunction): Malfunction of the flash memory on the main PCB. Turn OFF the power switch and ON again. Rewrite the latest firmware, or replace the main PCB ASSY.
    • F9 (Country code not entered): The country code was not entered properly. Re-enter the country code using "1.3.19 Setting by country (Function code: 74)" in Chapter 5.

  • How can I make my Brother FAX-2840 print darker?

    To make your Brother FAX-2840 print darker, you can adjust the density using the Density Adjustment setting. This is effective for prints from the computer and for network configuration/test print/font list/configuration from the panel. If the density is set on the computer, that setting will be effective.

    If your Brother FAX-2840 indicates "out of paper" despite being loaded, consider the following:

    • Paper tray: Ensure there is no paper set in the paper tray.
    • New toner sensor: If the new toner sensor did not detect the new toner cartridge correctly, install the toner cartridge.
    • New toner sensor harness: If there is a connection failure, reconnect the new toner sensor harness.
    • New toner sensor failure: If the new toner sensor is faulty, replace the new toner sensor PCB ASSY.

    The Brother FAX-2840 uses a Starter Toner with an approximate yield of 700 pages (for U.S.A. and Oceania) or 1,000 pages (for Europe), and 1,200 pages (for Asia). It also uses a Standard Toner with an approximate yield of 1,200 pages and a High Yield Toner with an approximate yield of 2,600 pages. These yields are based on printing A4/Letter size one-sided pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752.

The end of life of the drum unit is determined based on the "drum counter" or the "number of drum rotations", whichever is larger. Printing does not stop even when the drum unit reaches the end of life. The drum counter should be reset every time you replace the drum unit with a new one.

  • How do I clear the memory on my Brother FAX-2840?

    The user setting information, including information related to Net and user settings, is stored in the EEPROM and flash memory of the main PCB. You can delete all this data at once.

    To delete user setting information:

    1. Press the [Menu] button while the machine is in the ready state.
    2. Press the [▲] or [▼] button to display "Initial Setup" on the LCD, and press the [OK] button.

  • Can the Brother FAX-2840 print with low toner?

    Yes, when the "Replace Toner" message is displayed, printing can be continued by setting the machine to Continue Mode. In Continue Mode, the printing result when the toner runs out is not assured, and the user is responsible for it. Even in Continue Mode, printing stops when the number of rotations of the developer roller reaches the upper limit, and it remains stopped until the toner cartridge is replaced to prevent problems like toner leakage.

    The Brother FAX-2840 uses a Starter Toner with an approximate yield of 700 pages (for U.S.A. and Oceania) or 1,000 pages (for Europe), and 1,200 pages (for Asia).     To rewrite the firmware using a computer:

    1. Turn OFF the power switch of the machine. Then turn it ON again with the [5] button held down. Check that "PROGRAM UPDATE" appears on the LCD.
    2. Connect the computer to the machine with a USB cable.
    3. Double-click the "FILEDG32.EXE" file to start it. Select the "Brother Maintenance USB Printer".
    4. Drag and drop a program file that you want to rewrite (e.g., LZXXXX_$.upd) onto the "Brother Maintenance USB Printer" icon.
    5. Upon completion of rewriting, the machine restarts and returns to the ready state automatically.

It is impossible to anticipate all of the possible troubles which may occur in future and determine the troubleshooting procedures, so this chapter covers some sample troubles.

    Life of Toner Cartridge and Drum Unit <Life of Toner Cartridge> This machine detects the remaining toner only by the dot count and the number of rotations of the developer roller. The function to detect by the light sensor is not installed. As this machine is not equipped with a toner sensor as conventional models are, it manages the level of remaining toner by dot count during printing and the number of rotations of the developer roller.
  • Page 50 <Life of Drum Unit> The end of life of the drum unit is determined based on the "drum counter" or the "number of drum rotations", whichever is larger. Printing does not stop even when the drum unit reaches the end of life. The drum counter is based on the total printed pages on each drum unit.
