Diagnostic Tools

The SonicWALL has several built-in tools which help troubleshoot network problems. Click
Tools on the left side of the browser window and then click the Diagnostic tab.

DNS Name Lookup

The SonicWALL has a DNS lookup tool that returns the numerical IP address of a domain name
or if you enter an IP address, it returns the domain name.
1. Select DNS Name Lookup from the Choose a diagnostic tool menu.
2. Enter the host name to lookup in the Look up the name field and click Go. Do not add
the prefix "http://". The SonicWALL then queries the DNS server and displays the result at
the bottom of the screen.
Note: You must define a DNS server IP address in the Network tab of the General section
to perform a DNS Name Lookup.

Find Network Path

The Find Network Path tool shows whether an IP host is located on the LAN or the WAN.
This is helpful to determine if the SonicWALL is properly configured. For example, if the
SonicWALL "thinks" that a computer on the Internet is located on the LAN, then the SonicWALL
Network or Intranet settings can be misconfigured. Find Network Path shows if the target
device is behind a router, and the Ethernet address of the target device. Find Network Path
also shows the gateway the device is using and helps isolate configuration problems.
