CHECKING THE THERMOSTAT

1. Check:
Thermostat
G
Does not open at 70.5–73.5°C (159–164°F)
→ Replace.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
a. Suspend the thermostat "1" in a container "2"
filled with water.
b. Slowly heat the water.
c. Place a thermometer "3" in the coolant.
d. While stirring the water "4", observe the ther-
mostat and thermometer's indicated temper-
ature.
NOTE:
If the accuracy of the thermostat is in doubt, re-
place it. A faulty thermostat could cause serious
overheating or overcooling.
A. Fully close
B. Fully open

2. Check:
Thermostat housing cover
G
Cracks/tears → Replace.

INSTALLING THE THERMOSTAT
ASSEMBLY
1. Install:
Thermostat
G
Thermostat cover
G
Bolts
10 Nm (1.0 m•kg, 7.2 ft•lb)
NOTE:
Install the thermostat with its breather hole "a"
facing forward.

2. Install:
Copper washer
G
Coolant temperature sensor
G
Coolant temperature sensor
18 Nm (1.8 m•kg, 13 ft•lb)
3. Fill the coolant with the specified amount.
Cooling system
G
Refer to "CHANGING THE COOLANT" on
page 3-19.
4. Check:
Cooling system
G
Leaks → Repair or replace the faulty part.
5. Measure:
Radiator cap opening pressure
G
Below the specified pressure → Replace the
radiator cap.
Refer to "CHECKING THE RADIATOR" on
page 6-3.
