Glossary of terms

Following are some common terms that you may find helpful to
understand as you operate the Scan Station:
ATP — Adaptive Threshold Processing is another image processing
option for black-and-white documents. ATP separates the foreground
information in an image (i.e., text, graphics, lines, etc.) from the
background information (i.e., white or non-white paper background).
ATP is most useful when scanning one particularly difficult document
type only and converting it for OCR (optical character recognition).
When using Adaptive Thresholding, Threshold and Contrast settings
may be adjusted.
Contrast — the amount of difference between the light and dark
elements of an image.
Document Type — selecting a document type from the Kodak Scan
Station 100 Settings menu affects how the Scan Station reproduces the
color of a scanned document. Choose from the different document
types available to optimize your document images depending on the
type of paper document you want to send.
DPI (dots per inch) — a measurement of image resolution. Shows the
number of pixels contained within a square inch of the image. The
greater the resolution, the better the reproduction. Resolution is a key
factor of image quality, however, scanning at a higher resolution results
in larger file sizes and slightly slower document processing with each
increase. Most documents look fine at the industry standard of 200 dpi
(about 8 pixels/mm).
iThresholding — an image processing option for black-and-white
documents that dynamically evaluates each page to determine the
optimal threshold value and produce the highest quality image. This
allows sending document types with varying quality (i.e., faint text,
shaded backgrounds, color backgrounds) in a single batch yet still
provides excellent image quality. iThresholding reduces the need to
sort your documents by type for best results. When using
iThresholding, only the Contrast setting may be adjusted.
PDF — Adobe's standard for Portable Document Files, these files can
be read using Adobe Acrobat's Reader and edited with Adobe Acrobat
Standard or Professional. PDF files can be color, grayscale or black-
and-white. They are saved with compression so they are smaller than
many other file types. PDF files are saved with a .pdf file name
extension. Each image of your document is saved to one file.
Threshold — is a value used in converting a grayscale image to a
black-and-white image. A low threshold value produces a lighter image,
and can be used to subdue backgrounds and subtle, unneeded
information. A high threshold value produces a darker image, and can
be used to help pick up faint images. The Kodak Scan Station 100 has
two ways (iThresholding and ATP) of dynamically detecting and
adjusting image quality by choosing the correct threshold value for
each document.
