Glossary
icon An image that graphically represents an
object, concept, or message.
indicator lights LED lights on the printer
operator panel that communicate the current
printer status.
initialization A state where all settings return to
their default values.
internal font See resident font
jam recovery A printer technology that allows the
printer to continue printing a job without loss of
data after a jam has been cleared.
justification (right) Making all full lines of text
the same length in order to create an even right
edge.
lpi Lines per inch.
landscape orientation See orientation
moisture content The ratio of moisture to the dry
mass of paper. Moisture content varies for
different paper types and may change
considerably if open paper is subjected to
temperature and humidity extremes. The
gravimetric method measures the relative
moisture level by weighing the paper, oven
drying it, then reweighing it. The calculated result
is expressed as a percent value.

N-up printing Allows for printing multiple
reduced size pages on one sheet of paper.
offline The state in which the printer cannot
accept or print out data.
opacity The amount of printed matter that shows
through on the reverse side of a sheet of paper.
operating system The computer program or
group of programs that controls the basic
operation of the computer and its peripheral
devices.
operator panel The user interface on your printer.
It contains LED indicator lights and operator
buttons you use to show status and control the
printer.
parallel interface An interface that uses multiple
data circuits. It is usually faster than serial ports
and may also support bidirectional comm-
unication between devices.
PCL Printer Command Language. An escape
code printer language developed by Hewlett-
Packard.
peripheral device Any device (such as a printer)
that you attach to your computer.
pH The acidity/alkalinity of paper.
photoconductor module A module containing a
rotating surface that receives an image of a page
