Directions for using the [Background Suppression]
Background Suppression is a technology that detects the background level of the
drawing created with texts and lines. When dark background is selected from the
[Document Image Type], image loss may occur when copying a normal to light density
document.
Background may not be suppressed in the following events. In this case, use manual
adjustment.
• The document background is extremely dark.
• Document is torn or contains holes.
Use manual adjustment when the following is observed.
• The lead edge of the copy becomes blurred.
• Image loss occurs, or background is not completely suppressed.
[Auto] adjustment of [Background Suppression] cannot be used when [Picture] or
[Photo] is selected for the [Document Image Type].
Use manual adjustment for the following documents.
• Complex color documents, or Photo/Poster documents.
• Document has light colored horizontal lines or light color strings of text.
• Document has a low-density frame.
• High line density documents such as maps, that potentially have more lines than

Line/text length: Half of the document width.
Line/text width: 1mm or more (excluding the cases where the line/text density is
dark)
There are cases where a low-density edge is detected as the background.
As a consequence, edge and ambient images are erased, or background is not
suppressed.
